Thanks to HPI Check

Friend of mine selling his Mercedes Benz C220 Sport 2008 reg fully loaded, command nav, f/leather, AMG styling etc.
anyway his asking price was £17500, after 2 weeks of negotiations I managed to lower it to £15500, today i should hand him money and take merc, but on last minute i did HPI check and car came as on finance

Why would you do this Especially to someone you call friend

£20 out of pocket, but hey £15480 saved

Ask him to sort the finance out before you buy it?

+1

But not everyone can afford to pay off the finance before selling the car. Can you not offer him some sort of guarantee that you'll buy the car and try and work something out? Seems a shame to lose the car you really want.

Was he actually trying to defraud you - his intention may of been to pay of the finance with your money asap.

Alternatively, you could make the payment to the finance company?

Perhaps as he is a friend he was intending to use the money to pay off the finance and you would probably never have known. Wouldn't blame him totally, just ask him was he intending to pay it off, let him know you are aware of the money owing and if you still want the car you pay the finance company on his behalf and give him the balance, assuming of course that there is a balance, if there isn't and he cannot prove a means of paying the rest of the finance you should walk away.

first he told me that he needs money to pay towards his mortgage, now he telling that he is going to pay finance.
Sounds very dodgy, also he showed me original invoice from MB where he shown different reg number.

He paid originally £29k, and could not show me any invoices, so i can see how much is outstanding.
i told him can pay finance for him, but he said he will sort it out on Friday, before sells car.

I leave it til Friday, and make him run another HPI check before paying

if he clears the finance then has stops shelling out monthly which would help his cashflow and divert towards his mortgage. Could still be legitimate. Wait and see. Good luck.

It takes up to a week to clear it off HPI - best to phone the number directly on the HPI certificate and ask if they have any more interest in the vehicle, and then get them to fax a clearance letter to you - simples

i got impression that he is not going to clear finance, he mentioned that he tried webuyanycar, but could not be asked with hassle.
I just tried webuyanycar, just for valuation, and been offered £16700 for same car he wants to sell me for £15500.
That shows, his outstanding balance more than £16k, definitely something fishy
