internet routers?

so i'm just wondering.
what's the best internet router out there? best value, wireless connection, and whether it stays connected or not.

i'm planning to connect 2 laptops, ps3, iPhones, iPod touch.
i am a casual gamer.

i've done some research and saw that there's n-routers which are latest generation and fastest, and most reliable. but then i also read that they tend to disconnect,

let me know, thanks.

I have a small wireless router I paid $100 for at BestBuy. It's made by Apple and I use it for 2 laptops, iMac, 2 iPhones, XBox, and PS3. If I remember correctly it takes up to 30 wireless devices. I NEVER have a connection problem. They released a newer and improved version here:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC...US-KWG-WiFi-US

It's $180

The suggested Apple one should be good as well as the Cisco Valet series and the Netgear WNDR3700.

You can throw Tomato, DD-WRT, etc onto the WNDR3700 which improves it even more.

And finally, if your budget can handle it and your network programming skills are at a level where you can make $60,000+/yr: Cisco 2811.

i have a wrt610n but for most it is overkill as it is a simultaneous dual N-band router with 4 gigabit ports and a usb input

you can find it for like $140

+1...if you buy cheap routers just be prepared to have to turn off/on your router or constantly flush your dns...i learned the hard way

you run an ASA at home? lol

Anyways I agree on the Cisco stuff. Running a wrt600n dual band myself, with 2 wrt54gl's running DD-wrt working as wireless ap's/bridges. I think anything cisco/wireless related will be fine for you. Whether or not your going to need N or even use it is up to you. Im not really sure how I feel on the valet stuff but thats just me. GL

Yea..For teaching, certification and testing purposes.. Only reason I bought the Cisco AP is because every single top end Linksys product kept having weird failures. I gave away two Linksys wireless routers and kept the Linksys WRT300N to connect to my other lab equipment only. Maybe I just had bad luck

ah ok for labs that makes much more sense lol. But yea I was looking at the Cisco AP but decided to give DD-WRT a try since I like messing with things and experimenting lol.

For the OP you could probably just get away with a really good med-high end router that you'll only need to buy once. So I'd say get the N for the future and stick with a 4 port to save some money. You could always throw a switch on there if you need.

And Bavarian, have you played with any of the 4500 series switches? They are $$ but can get them with POE blades to power up some access points. Im trying to score one off lease if I can. Makes for a great lab and theres endless amounts of functionality you can do with it. Vlans, etc..

The 4500 is cheap, real cheap... The modules that you put in there are what break the bank for most people. I configure them (NativeOs only) but I don't have them for a lab because I don't wanna buy the modules. Its too much of a headache when you gotta decide what hypervisors, PSU and fans to buy. Any L3 switch made past 2004 would do 80% of the stuff the 4500 will do. The other 20% is geared for enterprise applications.

I buy most of my off lease stuff from this guy. He is dying for business lol. I havent spoken to him in a couple months so i dont know if he is still there.

I've been using a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router
#WNDR3400 for quite some time now paired up with Verizon DSL.

EZ setup, have (1) laptop hardwired, (1) network printer hardwired, (1) USB network HD hardwired, (2) laptops wireless, (1) desktop wireless, LG Internet TV Wireless, Sony BlueRay Player Wireless, DirecTV DVR Wireless, WII Wireless in a 3-story house with nary a connection problem or dropout over it's entire life.

http://www.netgear.com/products/home.../WNDR3400.aspx

I use the matching Netgear Hi Performance Wireless adapters for all non-computer items that are wireless ready - another EZ install with the Push 'N' Connect using Wi-Fi Protected Setup® (WPS)

http://www.netgear.com/products/home...e/default.aspx

Good security protocols also using Wi-Fi Protected Access® (WPA/WPA2—PSK) and WEP

Bought the router at BestBuy on sale and the adapters new off eBay...

i'm a big fan of the wrt54g with dd-wrt software, adds functionality, such as turning your router into a repeater in case you have a big house/need extended signal and dont wana drop an extra 120 for a repeater

+1 It is a great router but mine is too slow for my FiOS connection, even with DD-WRT and a mild overclock.
