Arlington/VA taxes and fees
First off, wanted to introduce myself and announce that I'll be moving to NoVA -- probably Arlington -- in the summer and taking delivery of a E92 335 hopefully shortly thereafter! I've read a lot of the posts in this forum regarding the dealerships in the area and it's all great info.
But now on to my question... I haven't been able to conclusively determine what the state/local sales tax rates on vehicles are and what the title/registration fees in Arlington County are. Can someone help me out with this? Thanks in advance and if anyone has any words of wisdom about buying a car in the area, it would be much appreciated! |

+1 on Googling. Sales tax on the car is 3%, I think, but I don't know what ARL's registration fees are like.

Personal property taxes in Virginia vary by County or Municipal locality. You should visit www.co.arlington.va.us ; then navigate through the taxation sections.
The Personal Property taxes (paid yearly) are $5 per $100 of assessed value (5%). You must also pay a $24 decal fee. The state of Virginia has Personal Property Vehicle Tax Relief on 61% of the value of the first $20K of a vehicle. So your taxes would calculate to: First $20 of Value: $390 (includes 61% relief paid by the state) Remaing Value ($26.8K avg): $1,342 (includes no relief) Decal Fees: $24 Total Yearly Property Taxes: $1,756 This assessment would be over and above any 3% sales taxes paid on the vehicle. Obviously the effective tax rates vary by county (I live in Loudoun) but they're all pretty close... Sorry for the bad news, but VA is a killer on Real Property and Personal Property Taxes; that's the price of living in the 2nd highest per-capita income area in the US...

Of course I tried Googling it (and visiting the Arlington County website), why is that always the first thing that people ask?
What I found was that the VA state sales tax is 5%, but there is a 3% vehicle sales tax. It doesn't say anywhere if this is in place of or in addition to the regular state tax. The Arlington County website lists several vehicle registration fees, but there is also a whole slew of caveats. Hence the questions. I was hoping someone would have a simple answer for me. Thanks for the info Scott. Is the Personal Property Tax paid at the time of sale or after the first year of ownership, as in Georgia? |

We suggested Google because it's an obvious answer and not everyone is thoughtful enough to do so before posting. Good that you were.
As you can see from the answers, the 3% tax on cars is in lieu of the normal sales tax. Also, the answer on the registration fees is a formula that's probably as complicated as the website makes it seem. As for timing, I think you get a bill for the initial registration fee within 30 days of getting your plates, then you pay for each successive year on a regular basis (each October, maybe?). BTW - welcome and I hope to see you at a DC-area meet sometime.

Well, the reason I asked is because when I was trying to find out what the taxes are for Newport News, VA last week, I googled it and found all of the data you were looking for. Suprised your county didn't come up via a google.

Best bet to get a 100% clear answer is to call the County Commissioner of Revenue to get a proper estimate. I am expecting an ugly bill when Loudoun sends me my 1st half assessment in April...
