Are front fogs illegal in UK/NI?

Simple question, is using your front fogs when theres no fog illegal in the UK or Northern Ireland? I was stopped by a cop last week who said it was + he'd drop a fine on me if he caught me again I use Ring sportzblue as dip lights + some ultra bright yellow fog bulbs I picked up in NYC, looks great!! Funny he never noticed the Ring bulbs are not road legal......

I think you are only allowed to use them when you have bad visibility. (fog) In Holland you get a fine when using them otherwise. In Switzerland as well by the way, although here you are allowed to also use them on curvy roads when there is no bad visibility.

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

[Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

236
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

[Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

As per Highway Code regulations in the UK

Absolutely. People who drive around with front fogs on instead of or as well as dipped beam when it's not foggy should be flogged and it looks daft.

When i was a kid, me and my brother were messing around in the front seat pretending to drive before my mum got in the car.

We had accidently knocked the front fog lights and she didnt realise ( i know it sounds impossible given the big blue light on the dash but this is pretty typical of my mum )

We drove off in the middle of the day no fog at all. My mum was pullled over by the police within about 5 miles. They told her it was a convention they were advising drivers to follow, especially female to indicate they were under duress or in danger.

The police told her they would always pull over a driver especially a woman with passengers in the back if her front or back fogs were on unnecessarily to double check everything was ok.

This was back in the 90s so i am not sure if the police are still treating this as a distress signal.

Totally agree. I cannot abide people who use foglights (front or rear) at inappropriate times (including when the slightest bit of drizzle falls). Drives me fucking nuts and it's 10x worse at night when they can be quite dazzling.

If it's the fronts you just end seeing two white dots and nothing else. If it's the rears (especially if there are two lights, one either side) your brain just keeps screaming "he's braking" all the time.

People who drive around with either front/rear or both sets of fogs on all the time are fucking idiots and should be given 3 points and a £1,000 fine. See how many chav mongs would do it then.

I despair at this time of year now we get early morning fog. If you're out on the Lincolnshire Fens in a pea-souper then having your rear fogs on is fair enough. If someone comes up behind you it's nice to turn them off once they've obviously seen you.

However, some people turn them on at the slightest sign of mist IN FCUKING CITY CENTRES!! Drives me mental. Sitting at traffic lights with some bastard in front with rear fogs on, and brakes, giving me a headache. This despite the fact we can clearly see cars 10 in front who haven't got fogs on.

I can't abide fog lights and inappropriate use should be punishable by death and those who turn them on "cos it looks well cool innit" should be labotomised, if they haven't been already.

Glad I'm not the only one that gets annoyed by this. Some people think it's petyy but it does my head in, maybe I am just overly sensitive to bright light (artifact of working at home in a dimmly lit room perhaps ) but it can be a real distaction when driving.

Fog lights should have a 6 digit pin code which needs to be entered in order to turn themon

Did you gather yet that you're the only person who thinks so?

to the copper who pulled you, and I hope he pulls many others for the same idiotic behaviour too.
