I have the OEM BMW Battery Tender. It works very well. It is btw a re-badged marked up version of the Deltran Battery Tender. You should try to obtain one from Deltran it would be cheaper.

Does it get hooked up under the hood or in the trunk?

Depends on the car. My battery is in the trunk so mine is connected in the trunk.
A simple battery tender from walmart works perfectly fine. I cycle mine between my car and motorcycle in the winter and have never had a problem.

I got the one from BMW for when I am out of town for extended periods (3-4months) and it works wonders!
never had a problem, except for the one time I forgot to disconnect it and I put the car in reverse and pulled the whole thing out of the wall socket.. but shhhh.... lol

Even if your battery is in the trunk there should be terminals under the hood.
