JB3 - And tunes in general (No oil cooler)
Forgive me, but I'm completely new to BMWs and really modifying cars in general. About a month ago I bought a 2010 Monaco Blue 335i xDrive. I come from a 2007 Audi A4 quattro with APR software.
I was very impressed with reviews and numbers of the N54 which is ultimately what attracted me to the 335i. I also knew there were tunes available which I was very interested in. I hadn't read about the necessity of an oil cooler until I lurked around here for a while. So...I've come to realize that I don't have an oil cooler. After reading about all of the dealer retro-fitting 07 335s with the oiler cooler, is there any word on why they continued building subsequent years without them as well? Is there something else that changed that made this less of a concern? I tried searching around and all I found was info about the 07 model year. Another thing, what would your advice be regarding getting a tune without the oil cooler. I will never track it, just a few spirited rounds of driving every now and then. Do you think a JB3 will be ok? Or should I stick with the Dinan stage 1 which is suitable for the N54 without the oil cooler? Thanks in advance. |

Welcome. I have 07 e90 335i without oil cooler and I have been running JB3 Map 5 93oct in VA weather without any issues for about 1yr now. There are many other great tunes available as well. See what is suitable to your needs.

I have an e92 (JB3/Map5/93oct) without an oil cooler in Texas and have had no problems. My car runs about 255-260*F in the summer when its 103*F outside, but still runs fine.
You don't really need an oil cooler unless you drive your car REALLY hard for long periods and don't need an aftermarket one to replace the stock oil cooler unless you track your car, in my experience. |

jb3, catless dps, dci, progressive meth. best 1/4 is 12.1 on dynolicous and have never came close to over heating. I have almost 400 logs with engine temps to verify. Seems to me if I were on a circut track it may be an issue but more oil and an oil cooler means a heavier slower car right?? I wouldn't go taking out my oil cooler for weight reduction purposes or anything but I wouldn't worry about it until you see the needle up over 270. My car lives at 240. I use Redline Water Wetter in my radiator and I have air scoops that supposedly take air away from the radiatior as well. I use Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer (1 qt) in place of 1 qt of oil despite everyone telling me not to and I couldn't be happier with performance, temps, engine noise etc. I live in Eastern NC what its hot year round.... if anyone needs an oil cooler its me. I see lots of people getting retro fitted but my car wasn't a sport model to begin with so I really have no grounds to bitch.... and I really have no good reason to want an oil cooler either.
The retro fit kit is the hard part of the whole deal. There are plenty of good oil coolers that fit and are affordable. Its the dang retrofit kit thats twice as much as a good oil cooler that keeps me from seriously considering one. That and the fact that my car, heavily tuned, does not appear to need one.

I wouldn't worry about oil cooler unless you're tracking. I've had SSTT, JB+, and Procede without cooler in the hottest summer days, and no problem.

I have had a 335i w/o oil cooler, and a couple with it. Doesn't really make any difference in everyday driving or 1/4 mile. If you track the car in hot temps, I don't think an oil cooler would save you anyways.

Unless you're planning on road racing not having a cooler isn't a big deal. BMS doesn't have one on their 335i development car and its been through hell and back without a hiccup. Just don't expect to be able to stay WOT 20 minutes at a time.
Sauing that an oil cooler is a must for road tracking. Mike |
