Update for those planning on going on the drive. The BMW CCA Oregon club president Brian Cone volunteered to lead the drive (since I can't be on that portion of the event myself). He tweaked the route a bit and is incorporating some stops as well as a place for lunch). We will have all the info and route sheets at HPF Saturday.
Looks like Brian's Route is:
So sorry if any of you were REALLY wanting to do the longer loop around Mt Hood. But it should be good times still and good roads/scenery. See ya tomorrow at Horsepower Freaks and Blitz Ladd.

VIP Parking Spots are filling up!!! I'd estimate that we only have 10 or 20 VIP spots left... I sent in my $15 and I've got my parking spot covered! Remember, you don't HAVE to be judged if you want a premium parking spot. And if you want to come you can still attend and park on the street (urban Portland Street parking, so you're on your own for that). Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each and we have some sweet prizes on deck. Bring extra money for the raffle, proceeds go to charity. Don't forget to bring canned food, as there are a lot of people in need during these trying economic times.

it was Great fun!! the drive was nice but TOO SLOW! we should not be holding up traffic on the freeway 45-55 in our cars espically in the center lane.???.. i was was beginning to nod off a few times. im only sayin maybe 65-75 depending on conditions of course
hate to see the group get pulled over for IMPEDING traffic flow. my general rule of thumb.. if you have more than 3 vehicles riddin' yer but yer too slow! move over heh my car prefers to RUN! hard to hold her back sometimes.. the car show after the drive .. really cool cars!!! and very nice condition rare ones!! thanks for the day!! (witch was also PERFECT WEATHER!!)

Agreed. The drive was actually causing traffic jams. No reason for that.
We dipped out after charburger and took our own pace back to PDX. Then met up afterwards. Great event though! |

Was pretty cool. But was a bit slow. I think there was just too many people.
Greates moment for me was following the R8 through a little tunnel and him revving the crap outa it. |

I wasn't on the drive. I had another family committment that made it so I had so skip the drive and just attend the HPF and the Blitz sections on either end.
I was the one that dreamed up the idea for the drive as part of the event. I had initally planned a "self directed" drive that would loop around Mount Hood (SR-14 to Hood River to Govt Camp to PDX), but since I wasn't willing/able to lead, the club President Brian stepped in. He has a different way of leading than I do. He prefers "Tours" that tend to be more leisurely and sightseeing events that IMO are less tailored to 'driving enthusists' like myself. I completely agree that impeding traffic with a rolling roadblock of 40 BMW's is not a good thing. Personally, I think that does just as much harm to our club's image as having a handful of hooliganism. I've led two different drives with the Oregon CCA. The first was through some epic twisties by Klickitat and the other was up to Windy Ridge. Of course, I tend to be one of the 'less conservative' board members and I bought my M3 because I love to DRIVE it the way that the motorsports division intended. Of course, I've had one person complain that my drive was "too fast", even though I was COMPLETELY tame in the towns and kept it likewise subdued in the straights between corners. (I'm not much of a blast it in the straights kinda person...) All that to say that it's hard to make everyone happy. But I completely feel your pain. That's kind of why I lobbied to have the drive be "self directed". On the windy ridge drive I did, I had 17 cars and as a leader it was almost unmanageable. It was honestly stressful having THAT many cars. We'll have to take a look at how we handle it next year (with undoubtedly more cars attending). Maybe they'll be willing to have it self directed (like the Leavenworth Drive) as I suggested. Or maybe we'll break the drive up into groups of 10, with leaders for each group. I think that would work as well. Or we need to advertise it as "a leisurely sightseeing tour" which is how Brian would have classified it from the start... (although he stepped in at the last minute and changed the route and jumped in to lead, so I couldn't have known...)

i know you did, that was very generous of you!! i was more than happy to run "route recon" and have my V1 on the look out with my expertly trained eyes,
of course the R8 would have drawn them like a magnet compared to our cars. I have driven the full length of the gorge 4 times a week for YEARS!! so im Very reliable as to the hiding places of the LEO's and my Bro is a state trooper in that section as well and tells me times when there is NOONE one duty.. (yes its true)

Any one know the guy in the blue m5? He seemed to take a lot of shots during the drive, and I was hoping I could find them.

I did a search through our paypal registration info and found the guy you were talking about. I sent him an email asking for a link to any online albums of his pics... If I get a response, I'll certainly report back here!
