Is this normal with a manual 335i??

Car has been fine (although it might have been that I hadn't really noticed) up until a couple of days ago - symptoms are;

After starting, the tickover revs drop to around 600rpm (is this right, seems low to me). Needs a little gas to get moving, then, if I'm stuck in traffic and give it a few beans to pull away dipping the clutch when I approach the car in front, the revs go up to about 1500rpm and then drop down - it makes for a very jerky pull away. It's also quite easy to stall it, especially in reverse, the revs drop really quickly and you have to give it a lot of gas to get it moving.

Is all this a sign of HPFP issues or just generally how the 335i is??

It's far more difficult to drive smoothly when pulling away in the 335i than it ever was in the M3 or my previous manual 330d.

If it doesn't get better, I feel a trip to the dealer coming on!

Thanks all
Ian

Sounds a bit 'edgy' to me. No idea what it's a sign of though. Don't recall mine doing this.

thanks Roger, definitely doesn't 'feel' right! Makes the driving experience a difficult one, certainly more than I reckon it should.

The CDV (clutch delay valve) can make pulling off and changing lower gears a jerky experience (guess this is still in the newer models) but shouldn't affect the revs.

600rpm tickover is correct. I'm sure I've read about a software release that brings the revs up when you dip the clutch to try and mask wastegate rattle, but I may be misremembering. Still sounds like the kind of thing a software update may well cure though

600rpm is the correct tickover.
The rest isn't normal, and may be an air leak.
You need to get it diagnosed properly and the engine read for error codes.
Anything serius will have a pointer to a likely cause in there somewhere.

When I first got the 335i, coming from a NA 330i, the throttle is pretty woolly (i.e. vague and not crisp) around idle, nowhere near the like of an NA motor.

In my experience this is typical of lower compression turbo motors, they always have a woolly idle and poorer response to small throttle inputs.

When reversing I always blip the throttle then catch it at 1500rpm and then slip the clutch to control speed, I've not had to do this in previous cars.

I've had the CDV removed and this didn't realy change pulling away, just gear changes where your clutch engagement speed is much faster.

Still could be worth a check over though, especially if you think its changed rather than been a constant issue.

The HPFP problem is endemic on American cars but it seems to be indicated by long cranks when starting (7 seconds and over).

Thanks all, spoken to the dealer and he reckons all this is normal but as he is up north he's suggested I drop it in to my local dealer just to be sure.

Doughboy, I'll try your reversing trick - thanks

So you removed the CDV.I have a aftermarket BMS CDV but for some reason it still does it in my 3rd to 4th gear change. What did you put in the place where the CDV goes?
