3rd party warranty and engine tuning ?

Hi,

I am about to purchase a 3rd party warranty given the fact that my factory warranty is expiring. The warranty is offered through my dealership, they advertise it (!). My question is, what is the stance of 3rd party warranty companies in regards to engine tuning ? How do they check for engine tuning ? Do they use rely on BMW's word for evidence of tuning ?

Why don't you ask them? If you're really in Romania, there's a pretty slim chance anyone on here has any more information on your dealership's warranty than you do...

Well, I prefer not to ask the dealership for obvious reasons. They know me as a good citizen and I don't want them to become suspicious since all my work will be done through them. I was just asking for general opinions/experiences regarding how 3rd party warranty companies handle the tuning issue.

Well depends what relationship you have with the shop doing the work. But since BMW is NOT footing the bill for repairs the dealership and BMW have MUCH less incentive to try to find your tune/mods as they will just bill the 3rd part insurance company. Generally 3rd part insurance companies have their own inspector who will snoop around your car to either approve or decline the repair. My guess is that most of these 3rd party adjusters are not as knowledgeable about how our cars are modded. At least for now, as the majority of our cars are still under factory warranties, but in the next year more and more 335i's are coming off factory warranties.

BUT if this adjuster finds any modification they will void your warranty or decline the repair.

I had a 3rd party warranty on my AMG and it worked well. I did not do engine mods on that car but even if I had (and there was a problem) I would have taken the mods off before going in for warranty work; 3rd party or not.

no use in asking for a general response, as VSC vary based on the Underwriter. the best way to find out about this is to ask you dealer to show you a sample copy of the contract so you can look at the guidlines.

look for a section called "commercial use or modifications"
if its there, its gonna state what they will and will not cover based on mods ...
