Do I need to change oil after track weekend?

I just had the oil changed about 2 months ago and I recently did a track weekend at Road America - 4 mile road course with 3 long straights. I did 8 30-minute sessions over the course of the weekend. My oil level still reads at maximum. Do I need to change?

I only ask because some of the GT-R guys change their oil after every weekend they spend at the track.

thanks!

You wrote OC 2 months ago, but how much mileage? Did you see really high oil temps in your sessions ( > 270F ) ? Are you going back to the track soon? I would say you probably don't, but hear this: DIY oil change costs about $65, maybe even less if you find oil on sale.

Also, I agree with Stett, see post #38

Always remember, changing your oil more frequently than BMW's recommended interval will go great lengths to prolonging the life of your motor/turbos ESPECIALLY if you track the car. At bare minimum cut the service interval in half for street cars and if you regularly track your car cut it into thirds.
Here's a BMW spec oil reference: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

I did 2 track events (road america, and the autobahn) this summer, with the same oil, that ended up with 8,000 miles, before I replaced it. It depends on the type of oil. I used Total Quartz 10W50 Racing. Even after the beating, and at 8,000miles, the oil analyzer showed plenty of life left in it. I just changed it because I already had in mind to do so at that mileage. I say change the oil, after like 5,000 miles, unless its at least 2 of the following:

1. BMW LL01 approved
2. PAO based
3. Racing spec oil
4. Life oil monitor shows plenty of life left.

That's a good idea. Use an ol' baster, pull some oil out of your oil filter housing, then:

Thanks for the feedback, I have only put about 1000 miles or so since the oil change and my temps never got higher than 255 (it was in the 40's most of the day and I have oem oil cooler and ar design secondary oil cooler). I will stick with my normal intervals and periodically check the oil level.

What you do need to change after each track event is, your brake fluid. Unless your using racing spec brake fluid in your car.

I had just put in motul racing fluid and switched to hawk dtc-60 right before the event. I switched back to my street pads afterwards but kept the motul in

I always switch before and after an event. Oil changes are less expensive than a new engine. I also change my oil every 2500-3000 for daily driving duty. 15000 miles is just stupid.

Off topic, but I think you have all your questions answered, how long does it take you to switch pads with Brembos for each wheel?

I actually had my shop do the swap so I don't know, I want to learn so I can do it myself moving forward. The rears should be pretty simple, pull a couple pins and you should be able to slide the pads in and out. You have to remove the front calipers (2 bolts each) and pull the pins to swap the pads from what I am told. The 6-piston calipers have a bridge for rigidity so you can't just slide the pads out. My guys told me it is fairly easy with the right tools so next season I will buy the tools and try it out.
