Short Shift Kits Bad?
I'm looking at getting a UUC SSK + DSSR and my buddy isn't exactly trying to talk me out of it but stressing that I'd be basically shortening the life of my transmission 30-50% even with normal shifting - backed by this article:

Here's your answer, straight from that article:
"In summary, as with guns, short shift kits don't kill transmissions, PEOPLE kill transmissions! Knowledge is power." |

Well sure .. but even with normal driving that article seems to point out that you would be 'grinding' more often .. and even a spirited race off the line would put way more of a load on your transmission to not even be worth it for anyone except if your car is a designated track car (with rebuilt synchros)

Personally, I don't know anyone who has ever thought about all that, or expressed any concern for it...on or off the various boards I have been on for the past 10 years. Not to say that there isn't something to it, but it hasn't stopped thousands of others. You gotta pay to play one way or another.
PLUS, BMW has a factory short shift kit. So....just a thought. |

"With any short shift kit it can be assumed that the time interval for all of the required "gear braking" CAN be reduced since the gears are closer together. "
That is just silly. You can shift just as fast with the stock shifter and just as slow with the shortest SSK. It is a rhythm thing that any halfway decent driver does, and has nothing to do with the length of the shifter. |

Yeah, the inside of the transmission has no clue what the leverage ratio of the shifter is. I say it is total BS. Remember, however, that these transimissions (like most) love smooth inputs. Buying a SSK should be about the desired feel and throw of the shifter, not about shifting faster.

all the SSK is doing is moving the pivot point, your not doing anything to the transmission. it does not know the difference. Its basic physics in leverage.
