Quoted $2,900 for winter setup! Help with alternate solution

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and looking for some help for a winter setup for my 08 E92 335xi with sport package (style 189 wheels) that I bought a few months ago. I talked to a dealership and he quoted me $2900, which seems ridiculous to me. Here's the breakdown that was sent to me.

Tire=250 each (225/45/17 bridgestone blizzak)
17" rim=441.58 each (INCLUDING taxes)
Tire Pressure Sensor=97.75 each
Tire pressure Stem=17.68 each
Mounting and balancing=50$x4 (each tire)

Total=1007.01 x4
savings=286.58 x4

First of all, his prices don't even make sense. I totaled each individual component and got $857.01 per wheel, he got $1007.01 (i think he's charging $200 per tire for mounting and balancing). I have no idea where he gets the savings from but if you subtract them from the $857 instead of $1007, it ends up coming to $570 per wheel ($2280 total), which is the price I think he meant to quote me. Still expensive imo.

So I've been reading into the forums and checking out my other options. Here's what I came up with.

1) Winter RFT on my stock 189s
RFT Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 RFT with 225/40/18F, 255/40/18R: $970 including shipping from tire rack. Including mounting and balancing at the dealership totals to $1,170.

2) Sport Edition A7s with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 RFT 225/45R17 XL.
Sport Edition A7s: $436
BMW caps: $60
Bridgestone Blizzak: $768
TPMS from tire rack: $196
Mount and balance x4: $200
Total: $1,660

3) Look for a used wheel/tire setup. Probably around $800.

If i went with option 1, would I use the sizings I mentioned or get 225/40/18 for front and rear? And i wouldn't have to buy new TPMS sensors right? Should I avoid RFTs to save more money?

What do you think my best option is? Feel free to provide alternative solutions. Thanks in advance.

Look on this forum at the for sale section. There are plenty of sets available, and some near Boston, if I remember correctly.

go with Option 2, but substitute the Rial Salernos for the A7's.

The dealership is out of their mind.

+1

One alternative is to use your OE wheels as winter wheels like option 1. Many do this, especially if they plan to upgrade their summer wheels.

Do not buy from the dealer!!

If you're going with a dedicated winter and summer set, buy a second set from tirerack or one of the other vendors here.

I would suggest throwing winter tires ($600 - 800 mounted is my guess) on your current rims. Then buy a dedicated summer set for better looking rims.

Or consider just putting some very good all season tires on and call it a day. Winter tires are superior to all season, but if you're careful (like most the folks on the road that run average all seasons during the winter), you can easily get by with an all season set.

You should be able to get reps and some decent snowtires for $1400, $1600.

Check craigslist as well. You can usually find wheels and tires or just tires pretty cheap. Just find a set that has been used only one year or so and save about 50% off price for new.

I just searched craigslist boston and is a set of rims and tires (Dunlop SP 225/45/18 and 18" rims) for $800: Set of 4 18” ASA JH8 (18x8.5 5-120 ET40 ASA JH8) Wheels and
4 225/45R-18 Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 XL tires, mounted,
Including 433MHZ Tire pressure sensor
Approx. 12K miles

Here's another listing for Blizzak LM25's in 18":
These premium snow tires are like new (see pix) and came off a 2007 Lexus RWD IS250 with low mileage. They are two different sizes. Two are 255/40R18 99V (rear) and two are 225/40R18 92V (front). The IS250 uses many different size tires based on model year and RWD or AWD. You can check your Lexus IS250 tire size here. http://www.dragtimes.com/Lexus-IS250...-m27-n792.html . Of course, you can use them on many other cars.

The list price for these extremely high quality tires is about $229 each, or $916 plus shipping for a set of four new tires (you can check the price on the link below. The 245 40VR18 are listed at $229. They are right in between the 225 and 255 size.)
https://www.tiresavings.com/tireShop...25&season=Snow

Because they are two different sizes, I am asking only $100 per tire, sold separately, cash, no shipping. You can read about these incredible tires below. They make the IS250 drive like a snowplow in mud, ice, slush, and snow. These are V-rated tires for high performance cars. The regular H-rated tires are not as high performance and are cheaper.

I, of course, have to be the contrarian.

The dealer quote is high - but not that outrageous for what they are offering.

RFT snowtires are expensive and $250 per corner isn't out of line at all. TR has the narrower ones at 160 plus shipping.

The quoted wheels are OE and include centercaps.

The TPMS are OE and are quoted quite high - but at BMW dealer prices

$200 for mounting/road force balancing isn't that high. Local DC shops are about $120 for just the balancing - without mounting.

That said, you can put together a better package for a lot less money.

Me - I'd do the ContiExtremeWinterContact for $115 each ($460) on a set of Rial Salernos for $119 each ($476.) Add 4 TPMS sensors for $196 and $60 for BMW centercaps and you're at about $1200 after shipping. TR will mount and road force balance gratis.

If you're planning on keeping the car a few winters then I'd buy new. Most people overstate the condition of their tires/wheels and if you buy new then you know how they were stored for subsequent winters.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I am going to buy new so I can avoid risking people overstating the condition of the tires like cb1111 said. Also, I like mithiral67's idea of putting winters or good a/s on my current wheels with the possibility of getting a better looking set of summer wheels.

So I think I am going to go for good all-seasons. Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires is my top choice right now and a set is a reasonable $688. They seem to have good reviews and do well in the snow. If you disagree let me know.

If you are going to get a new dedicated Summer set-up, why wouldn't you get Winter tires as opposed to the all-seasons? Better safe than sorry.

I had two sets (style 230 and breytons) and am switching to DWS's A/S's on the breytons as i prefer how they look over the 230s. DWS's are supposed to be great in all weather.

And unless the tread on ur current RFT are gone, probably can get a couple bucks selling used.

True, but I'm not 100% sure that I'll be buying dedicated summer wheels so I could just keep the A/S DWS's on in the scenario that I don't buy a summer set. These all seasons seem like they should to do the job in the snow as long as i don't drive like a maniac.

Good point, they only have 4k miles on them and just measured the tread at a little over 1/4" so practically new.

I would recommend not wasting your money on the TPMS. It's a waste of money. The BMW sensors don't even show the pressures at each wheel.

I DON'T recommend Bridgestone Blizzaks at all. I had the LM-25’s for a season and I couldn't wait to get rid of them. While the Blizzaks were great in the snow, their dry road handling was absolutely horrible. The Blizzaks made my BMW handle like a truck on dry roads, and dry roads are what you're mostly driving on during winter in coastal New England anyway.

My current winter wheel setup for my E90 335i has 225/45R-17 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D tires mounted on 17x8 Rial Salerno wheels (with TPMS). They're not RFTs, so I carry a can of Fix-O-Flat in the trunk when my winter wheel setup is mounted on the car. The tires are very good in the snow and they handle pretty decently on dry roads too. I got them about 12 months ago at TireRack for $1,244 + tax + shipping.

Your best bet (money wise = cheapest) would be buying your winter setup thru Tire Rack.

BMW does offer complete wheel packages. The tires come shipped to your dealer complete! I would try calling around to various parts depts. I looked on BMW NA's website but found nothing. Part of the problem is your car will only take a few OE wheels.

You could also try Tischer or Dan@United for a quote from them. They give good discounts.

I found some options on BMW Canada's website:

http://www.bmw.ca/ca/en/owners/acces...der_spoke.html

For... $3K in Canadian dollars. Not sure how much that is in USd.

Just FIY... on my 135i I bought some OE BMW winter wheels package. They were 7j x 17"s with 205/50HR17's RFT's. Cost me 1,300 euros complete. And that was woithout the 19% German sales tax! I went with OE BMW wheels bc 1). I liked the OE look better and 2). the shipping to my APO was just too high going thru Tire Race. The difference was only $200 in the end. So I wet OE route.

Good Luck.
