i feel for you fleet....i have many friends from SA who emigrated to canada due to safety concerns and increased opportunities. one of these people was my bmw salesman coincidentally. he is so happy and has now opened up a successful mortgage brokering business. he is mostly relieved because he knows his kids will be safe more than anything else

come to canada......better govt than george bush's usa IMO!!!!

too bad because SA is such a beautiful place....

Fleet...try applying at one of the many international organizations in DC or NY or wherever. I am not sure what your background is so I'll leave it to you to decide what organization and how. Work authorization/visa sponsorship (A1/A2 - diplomatic) is an easier process than H-1 and the likes. Once you're settled in, you can pursue other more permanent arrangements at your leisure. Just an idea...

Trust me, What you actually want to do is move to Canada!!!

I love the US, it's my home, but it's mostly full of Strip Malls, Wal-Marts, McDonalds, and a vast Majority of people who think all these things are Terrific...

Also, Canada is much easier to immigrate to than the US, (I've Heard). then it's pretty easy to Immigrate from Canada to the US. If that is the Goal.

Fleet, I may be able to advise you. I came to the US twenty years ago on an H1B Visa.

From then onto a Green Card.

You can PM me if you want.

There is a lot I miss about England but the opportunities here and the standard of living are unequalled.

Agree with Steve...and in combination with my post.

My observation:

A2 visas as given by international organizations like IMF, IFC, world bank and various other agencies and of course embassies are not subject to quotas like H1Bs. They're also easily and speedily given out and approved.

A2 -> H1B -> Green card (employer facilitated)

or you could always marry a citizen

South Africa to Canada may be a major shock as far as climate is concerned.

Just a thought.

I live in Southern California so basically moving ANYWHERE would be a shock to my poor addled, spoiled sense of weather.

Depends on where you're at! Here in the NW your going to get a lot of IFR conditions, lot's of clouds and rain, but then again if you're in New Mexico/Colorado/Arizona/Nevada/Utah you can expect Clear Blue skies prolly right around 300+ days per year.

I just moved back to Toronto from VA...brrr it's freakin' cold but it's good to be home...

Canada also has "free" health care...well you pay for it through your taxes but at least you dont need to worry about it if you arent employed..AND BMW's are more expensive..well in comparison we are the 2nd cheapest..just get into health care...major shortage!

Good luck

i know some friends from South Africa in highschool that immigrated over to Canada with their whole family, not sure what their qualifications were...

the weather in Canada will never be as nice and sunny as our friends in California, but if you live in the west coast of Canada, like in Vancouver, the winters are much milder compared to the eastern cities like Toronto, in Vancouver, we rarely get below -10C and at the most snow once or twice a year and our summers are sunny but rarely over 30C

i spent two weeks in South Africa many years ago, beautiful country and landscape, but i guess there are some social, political issues that havent been solved for so many years...

lol, this method works if you want to enter Canada as well, buy a ticket, then rip up your original passport, flush it down the toilet, then when you land, declare yourself a refugee

2 of China's most wanted criminals now have refuge in Canada (in Vancouver actually) using this method...because if they were allowed to be sent back to China, they will most probably be shot with AK 47's
