91 octane Shell, or 93 octane E10?
What pump gas will give the better performance on the drag strip? Would it be 91 octane Shell gasoline, or would it be 93 octane E10 (10% ethanol)?

I have used each of these on the street (I couldn't pinpoint any difference), but I have only used Shell on the strip. If somebody else has experience with both and can attest to which is better, it might save me from a wasted day of testing on the strip using inferior fuel.
I have read the discussions on mixing pump gas with toluene or with race gas (Octane mixture formula?). I doubt I will do either of these. Will the higher octane of the E10 produce faster ETs than the lower octane, but greater energy of the 91 octane Shell? The possibility of high alcohol content fuel causing other problems have been discussed in detail elsewhere, so we don't need to rehash that one. |

I thought the maximum amount of ethanol that they are allowed to put in is 10%. And our cars are only certified to run up to 10% iirc.
I don't know about the states but here in Canada, they'd specify explicitly if the fuel contains any alcohol in it. And we have 91/94 octane without the additive of ethanol. But in general, I wouldn't want to fill up my tank with fuel containing ethanol. It would most likely decrease your fuel efficiency and if the fuel contains moisture, it could be bad for the engine. |
