Wastegate rattle - I thought they weren't replacing the turbos anymore?

My car has been up at the dealership for the last two weeks now getting the wastegate rattle fixed. I think most of the time they've been trying to jump through hoops with BMW, but I was under the impression (from reading on here) the first attempt at fixing the rattle was a software update. At first I was told they were going to replace the wastegates and if that didn't work they'd replace the turbos. Now the story I'm getting is that they're in the middle of replacing the turbos.

Has anyone else had their turbos replaced the first time they brought their car to the dealership for this problem?

Yea that's the bulletin I saw, which explicitly states "Do not replace the turbos!". So who knows I might be picking it up today, fingers crossed.

They follow SIB. My car was in shop for 2 weeks as well and they ended up replacing torbos. Make sure u let them know to take care of turbo lag after the software update (if ur car falls under this problem)

yeah, you are lucky... I had to take mine in twice, first software update then new actuators. The rattle has gone away, but I was hoping for new turbos!

Brought mine in a couple weeks ago and mentioned wastegate rattle for the first time.

They did software update and then a day or two of "testing / measurements" and "DME interogation" before they went ahead with replacing both turbos. They told me that actions were directed from corporate as well as getting final approval for turbo replacement.

All together it took about a week. I was pleasantly suprised that the dealership was pushing the whole issue and just giving me periodic updates. No arguments required on my part. That is what customer service should be!

I wish I knew about the no lag option but I guess it doesn't matter because I am running Procede anyways. That would be a good question for Shiv.

I took mine in about a month ago, and they just dropped in new turbos right off the bat. Who knows? you may end up with a new set.

I had the same experience...no hassels.

Yes the wastegate conversion IS still available for pre 09/2007 build cars. Don't let them tell you otherwise. I had to go back three times and rattle heads hard but I finally got a lot of appologies from the SA and her Tech leader.

still replacing turbos....

Just thought I add onto the thread, just to inform people about dealerships replacing the turbos.

My car:
2007 335i 6mt
48,000 miles
Production date Oct. 2006

With my warranty ending this month I figured I get everything repaired before it came down to me paying for it out of my pocket. One of the issues I had was the wastegate rattle, it never bothered me too much until I realize that the car wasn't boosting as it should, this bothered me. The car was hitting peak at 5 psi.

Brought the car in and the end result were new turbos but not until they did the few test that were in the bulletin, starting with the software update, then moving onto the replacing the actuator rod, but from the invoice it seems there was too much play on the pivot/shutter. So they checked the wastegate disc and found that "valve face sits flat but if you release vacuum and reapply its not flat." After that it was advised to replace turbos.

I didnt have to fight the issue and everything went great. It took about a little over a week to do the work, brought the car in Nov. 30 picked up today. Wasn't complaining though cause the gave me a 2011 335i coupe with M-sport package, Premium Package, Cold Package, and Navi as a loaner.

hope this helps for those wondering about warranty replacement turbos.
