FIOS, anyone using?

Anyone here have FIOS? How do you like it and what are you paying for it?
I just signed up for the Extreme hd and 25/25mbps internet + 1 digital box and a standard box for $99.99 per month ($99 is included taxes) with a 2yr contract. I use to have Comcast but their internet sucks. Want to know how satisfy you are with FIOS.

Internet awesome. TV sucks. I tried the TV last month thinking I'd switch from DirecTV. The FIOS equipment is ancient. The DVRs are dreadfully slow and the software they use for the navigation isn't even HD.

I switched back to DirecTV as they gave me a good deal when I told them I was moving to FIOS. I use FIOS for Internet and its been superb. I get the 25/25 service and I never get an outage. The speed tests often show speeds greater than 25 both ways.

Price wise you can't beat the FIOS bundle. But you do get what you pay for in regards to the TV service. I pay a lot more for my unbundled FIOS Internet and DirecTV combination.

Had it since they beta tested it years and years ago in my town. Moved right from DSL to Fios - no Comcrap for me. Internet is fantastic, TV picture quality is excellent but their interactive guide and DVR interface could use some updating. Nothing major, but there's better out there in that department. Nothing that should really deter you from the service though. In the 5+ years we've had it, it's never hiccuped or went out once - not during snow storms, ice storms, thunderstorms, or anything. It's been flawless.

A few notes if you're more technically inclined. The Actiontec router they provide is decent, but the wireless range is terrible. You will need some better equipment if you have a larger house, or a house where signal doesn't carry well. We have two high end Cisco APs connected to it, and it's perfect. If you want to replace it altogether, the device itself still needs to be on the network since it's responsible for updating the STB guides and On-Demand.

Any other questions, just ask.

It's great, TV service is on par with Comcast & internet is 10x better.

DirectTV has a better interface but the entire dish thing sucks when it goes out/wind blows/rains/snows blah blah.

DirecTVs DVR technology is so much better. Going from Comcast to FIOS will be a nice transition. But I tried to go from DirecTV to Fios and man that was painful. Spoiled for too long I guess. FIOS drove me crazy:

- Super slow navigation
- Home media not on par with DirecTV. I can watch any recorded show from any of My DVRs from any TV in my house.
- Quality wise DirecTV offers 1080P content. No such thing on FIOS.
- I get the NFL sunday ticket, no such thing on FIOS
- The FIOS boxes don't have RF remotes.
- The FIOS user interface is quite bad. I Comcast really worse? Thats hard to believe. I'm not saying DirecTV is all that, but its so much better than FIOS.

Anyway thats my 2 cents. I'd still say go with FIOS as it will be better than comcast and the price is right.

I absolutely agree with all of that but if it's a windy/cloudy/rainy/snowy day you can't really enjoy much of those features on directtv

I've used all 3 and I'd go with DirectTV's interface/box with Comcast/Verizon service any day for the ultimate TV package. NFL ticket is also boss.

everything is setup....its awesome
now i notice that the two coax cables running to each tv box....can also be connected to the router so basically is all-in-one connection

anyone know if i have to use their tv box to watch tv or as long as the tv has a tuner, it'll still work?

It won't, you need their box. They offer some $5/mo real basic (and small) STBs good for non-HD and no interactive guide. I think the SD box with guide but without DVR is $10/mo and the HD or HD with DVR goes up from there. Gets expensive quickly renting the damn things, unfortunately.

i see...
1 more question, my internet plan is a 25/25 mbps so now I'm testing my wireless laptop speed on those speed test sites and I'm only getting 13/16 mb max (upload speed seems to be higher vs download)

There are SO many factors that contribute to what your throughput is on a wireless network. Everything from how many other networks are around, to encryption level, to other sources of interference, to the card in your particular laptop, to how far you are from the AP all play a role. You'll probably never get your line's capacity on an 802.11g network, unfortunately.

I agree with all said here. I have FIOS and pay for 25/15 Internet service, but routinely test (yes, I agree that the speedtest stuff needs to be taking with a big grain of salt) at around 30/20. Even more important than raw throughput is latency...and this connection seems to have very low latency. So, excellent Internet service.

I used to have Charter Cable Internet (before FIOS came to town) and it was soooooo awful that nearly anything would look better. Lots of outages, speed all over the place, ancient equipment, etc. The main problem though was the total unresponsiveness of the customer service. I've heard/seen similar stories with all cable Internet providers. Someone at work - who made the mistake of buying Comcast telephone services has had no phone for over a month while Comcast argues with her about who's responsible for her router. Crazy bad stuff. Bottom line is that you have to have some pretty awful customer service to make Verizon customer service look better. Maybe the point is that the Verizon network seems to be stable enough such that it's not necessary to interact with their customer service.

I will also agree that FIOS TV is not great and is expensive. This is particularly true when adding HD to the mix. The Motorola boxes are required, slow, and expensive. I'm not bothering with DVR, which I understand is not great with FIOS. Oh well....I'm really watching so little "broadcast" TV nowadays that this service hardly matters.

But the FIOS Internet is great.

I wish FIOS internet would come to Quincy...I could care less about cable TV.. there's never anything good on and it will be obsolete in a few years... internet streaming content is where it's at
