LMAO I am pretttttty sure that the extra disc storage is in the trunk on the left side. There should be a CD changer back there. Usually I would say this: but at least you tried.

LOL, are you 100% sure you have that option? I know my 08 335xi e90 didn't have it, I thought it did until I looked.

i'm pretty sure that's a rare option. I think the cd changer is under the plastic panel on the left side.. you have to pop it off

I'm sorry to tell you, but our cars do not come with an in dash 6 disc CD changer. The only place a factory changer would be would be in the trunk.
Interesting that this question doesn't come up often, although I suppose disc changers have been mostly replaced by the convenience and capacity of iPods.

Yeah, it's a single disc which BMW puts numbered buttons 1 through 6 right below (looks just like the 6 disc changer setup from many other brands) but those numbers are just for your presets. I thought the same thing when I first sat in the 335 and looked at the radio, but upon asking (since I didn't think they had an in-dash changer) I was quickly brought back to reality. Lucky for me I have Sirius and iPod connection for my iPhone so a CD changer isn't nearly as big of a deal as it used to be for me.

You're correct. 12 GB of the 80 GB HD is available for music (was originally 8 GB but BMW made a last minute changed and increased the amount available). The remainder is for navigation, speech, contacts, etc.

Here is a question no one seems to be able to answer.
When you load music into the hardrive (say for example from a studio CD) what bit rate is the music being burned at on the hardrive. Is it 128kbps, 192, 320, lossless quality?? I think anything less than 320 is just average quality. All my music in my iPod is apple lossless which burns it at a bit rate of anywhere from 500-900kbps at this rate it sounds pretty decent. People fail to realize that an actual studio CD is uncompressed audio at a much much higher bit rate so when you take that and compress it down to say 128 you lose alot of quality. Does anyone know what bit rate music is stored on the car's hardrive? |

I would suspect that it is stored at whatever bitrate you put it in at in the first place. It's a hard drive, so you just copy your files over, and the HU decodes them and reads them.
320 is usually pretty good for MP3s, 192 for VBR MP3s. But having said that, I still come across a lot of 320kbps MP3s that sound horrible, either because of the way the song was recorded, or the encoder the person who ripped the song used. A recording in a studio is more than uncompressed audio. You have separate channels that are mixed in as the recording is played, and separate channels are routed towards different speakers, etc. Mixing the tracks together and turning that into a 2 channel stereo file, even if it is uncompressed, will already yield an important loss in definition. It only goes downhill from there. |
