There are people running 17 PSI day in and day out for 50k miles with no issues, and then theres people running stock with dying turbos, injectors, etc. However, running a tune will increase the occurrence of components failing. Whether you have an issue or not is entirely up to chance.

Actually, increased boost will make the car stronger. Just like us humans by working out get stronger (muscles mass), boosted car will get stronger as it has to deal with extra boost.

The JB4 will not really show increased engine wear. In a street car you spend 99% of your time in the low RPMs and the engine is built to be run all day at 10/10ths. The difference will be imperceptible.

The problem isn't wear, it's multiplying the possibility of catastrophic faliure. To answer your question, yes there have been catastrophic faliures, but these are extremely rare. Catastrophic faliures are so rare that I've coresponded with Dinnan and they claim they have never had an engine fail due to their N54 mods (Dinnan offers a warranty so I guarantee they would hear about 100% of engine faliures).

The moral of the story is that if you take the nessesary percautions (Dinnan requires you to instal extra cooling at medium boost levels) and don't go crazy you won't have an issue.

With the extra cooling I'd recommend going the Dinnan or BMW performance (BMW Performance Power Kit) route to minimize the possibility of the dealer complaining.
