Strange smoke/noise after downpipe install
Hey all, just finished returning the car back to stock EXCEPT INTERCOOLER
First is my mod list: Coolingmist meth kit, Helix intercooler, JB3 2.0 on map 7, O2 downpipe fix, UR exhaust So here goes the story: Bought used raceland downpipes, which looked excellent. Installed the downpipes started up the car; upon start up, the car made a rasp/metallic clinking noise.. revved it up a bit, and it sounded like a bunch of tin cans rattling around 2k rpm. I had a friend rev up the car and hold it where it was clinking and I looked at the wastegate actuator arm, and it's shaking was consistent with the noise. Took the car for a drive, car had a lot of smoke billow out of the exhaust tips. Figured it might have been oil inside the downpipes from the previous owner but I have driven over 150 miles since, and it still poured out. So now i figured the turbo seals are toast and so is the wastegate..I JUST RETURNED COMPLETELY to stock and everything is dandy; no smoke no noise... Things I have tried(all while downpipes were still on): Disabled meth Went to stock map on JB3 Took out JB3 THE ONLY RESOLUTION WAS TO TAKE OUT THE DOWNPIPE and everything went away. Noise and smoke.. Can someone explain?? I am afraid to put on the downpipes again only to have to take em off. Last edited by wesborl898; 11-14-2010 at 02:13 AM.. |

Until someone more knowledgeable chimes in... did you place the O2 sensors in the proper places and how are you dealing with the check engine light now that you're catless? Also, did you use gaskets and check for leaks at the flanges?

All O2 sensors were marked before I did install to ensure I wouldn't mix it up. I bought a o2 fix from burger tuning. It's set at the recommended location. Used stock gaskets with no leaks anywhere. |

found out the smoke problem!
I JUST TOOK IT to Rallye BMW with stock downpipes(no smoke) and they verified that there was a oil leak at the oil pan and also somewhere in the engine. S.A. said it was going to be a big job and it's been in the dealer for 2 days now. |

The rattling is just the wastegates, can't hear them with the stock downpipes due to the cats. Had the exactly same thing happen when i put on my AR dp's
