buying a car in europe

so im heading over to germany with dad in feb and we will prob take the opportunity to get a car for our place in greece and drive it down.

ive looked at some carsaleseque german sites and the price of e92's are amazing.

i.e. 23 k euro for 2008 325i

my question is are these prices with/without tax (cant read german) and does anyone know if there are import taxes for registering in another country?

ill prob ask in the german section aswell but just thought someone might know around here

that price isn't so amazing...

Euro23,000 is about AUD$30,000

... considering what you can get for AUD$30,000 in USA

I'm actually quite surprised of that price for a BMW in GERMANY!!!

Most prices would include the GST (around 19% if my memory serves me correctly). You should however be able to get the car without GST if you are exporting out of Europe. HOWEVER, please note I am fairly sure that you need to have owned and run a car for 12 months overseas if you want to import it into Australia.

I think he's talking about buying the car in Germany and then actually driving/registering it in Greece? - not Aus.

Systech you're referring to the personal import rule which is correct, just a bit more info on that:
If the car is sold in Australia by an authorised dealer then you can import a car you have owned overseas for more than 12 months.
Ie: E92s are sold here, therefore you can only import one via the personal import rule. You can only personally import a car once every 5 years.
Mitsubishi Evo 8s are no longer sold here by a dealer, therefore you can import one.

Sounds about right; cars aren't cheap in Europe, they are just expensive in Oz. Ordinary people with ordinary jobs can buy new BMWs.

Most European countries have a GST-like value added tax, but it is included in the sticker price and it is paid once when the car is new. Unlike Oz stamp duty you don't repay it every time you buy a used car. But different European countires have different rates of vehicle tax eg Finland and Denmark are expensive places to buy cars, UK and Germany are cheap. So you need to check with Greece what their re-registration and any additional taxation requirements are.

i really would like something bigger than a small coup but driving in athens and finding parking is hard enough as it is, not to mention the narrow roads of the islands
