How did you sell your old car?
One of the hassles of getting a new car is getting rid of the old one.
The last time, I gave it to my brother. Another time, I went to Carcash, a NY area buyer who gives you cash on the spot, but this was an old Toyota and it was only worth $800. Everyone says the dealer won't give a good price on trade-in but I don't want a hassle selling it. What did you do? I'll be selling a 2000 528i in good condition but with 129K miles.

if you dont want the hassle of selling the car, ask the dealer how much he will give for it (after all your negotiations for the new car) and check how much carcash will give you for it.
simple comparison - minimal hassle.

I have sold 3 cars on auto trader and two on Ebay. I got over KBB on Ebay both times (once I got almost double) and on AT I got right at KBB pricing.
The dealer can eat me with the pricing they offer, I know they are running a business but some times their offers are just downright insulting. If money is not a big deal to you then loose the 2-5K and just "give" it to the dealer on trade in. Jesse |

I wasn't aware of autotrader. Just checked it out and I like the price estimate they gave me.
how long did it take?

Traded in at the dealer. Sure, you can get a little more selling it yourself, but I hate the hassle.

When I got rid of my Jeep to get my E46, I traded it in. Got $1000 for it which I thought was fair.
Turns out one of the sales reps there bought it for hauling around stuff. When I went back to the dealer to get my real plates installed, he said to me "I can't get it into 4-wheel drive" and the first thing I said was "You test drove it before you bought it!" Then he laughed and said that he just couldn't remember what to do. Pointless story, I know!

Hi,
I used Autotrader to sell my old E46. It sold in 2 weeks. I was surprised at how quickly the car sold. Ebay is another alternative but the price you will get here will be lower. Regards, Hitman |

I think I am going to take my Infiniti SUV to CarMax. I hear they offer reasonable $$ compared to trade in, and hassle is minimal.

I ended up trading it in with the dealer -- they gave me the Kelly value for a trade-in in good condition. I know I'm passing up on some money, but when I stopped and thought about the time it would take, I just grabbed at the dealer offer.

Traded it in at auction price, same as Carmax price, which is similar to carcash I think. I also called a wholesale buyer, all the bids were the same $17,500. It was a Tahoe and they are not selling through private party much more than the auction prices so trading it in $17,500 also saved me 6.25% in taxes on that amount, which equals another $1093.75. So if I sold it I would have needed to sell it for $17,500 plus the tax savings, another $1093.75, just to break even. I didn't see that happening so I traded it in. Much easier and I don't have a bunch of yahoos coming to my house offering me $15k after they test drive it and kick the tires for an hour, at night, when I coud be eating dinner.
That's how the taxes work in TX though, not sure about your state. I did sell a car that was worth about $4.5k through a consignment lot. It was $100 up front and $100 a month to park it there. They even put it in Auto trader and handled all the test drives and buyers. They called each time before a test drive to ask if it was OK. This was a great deal. Wholesale was around 3k for it so it was completely worth it. The downside was I didn't have full coverage insurance on it so if something happened I was SOL. Good luck...it is a PITA plus it's another way for the dealer to screw with the prices and negotiating. |

i'm using craig's list too and got a few responses...anything you gotta pay for is going to be my last resort since these cars are basically selling themselves. :rocks:
