Title Problems - Any DMV Experts?

I purchased my E92 a while back from a private party. First off, the sale went perfectly and it has been an awesome car. I received the title in the mail bc it was financed perviously. Alllll good.

Here's the problem: I was dating a girl for a while who is quasi-new to LA, so we planned to go to the DMV together to wait in the lines. We went and there was a problem with my smog cert. getting reported so I was going to have to make another trip to the DMV by myself to get it taken care of. I accidentally left my documents (title, bill of sale) at her place that night - the night that happened to be the night I broke it off with her! Since then she has told me she has no idea where the documents are and is being an absolute b*tch about helping me at all. She says they're not there - 100% bullshit.

I've called the DMV asking what I should do and they're telling me I need to get the original owner to fill out a lost title form and bill of sale and send it to me - such a hassle and an embarrassment to do. Do any of you guys have any idea of how I could handle this differently by myself? The reg has been expired and I really need to get this taken care of. Thanks in advance.

The title was officially transferred to you already, or hasn't been completed due to the smog?

If it was completed, YOU are the owner and just need to file that lost title form.

I am not the "owner" in the DMV's eyes. The title hasn't been transferred - that's what you do when you register the vehicle.
