if your talking about the 8500 x50 i don't think there is an on light, except the one on the power cord by the mute button, and that should light up, if its on it will display either highway, city, or auto depending on your mode on the unit itself. As for it not going off when a cop rolls by you or is next to you, unless they are shooting radar while they are rolling, it won't go off. In PA police use mostly the Ka band, and K band for radar. Some people have been saying that the e9x's in the US have a coating on the windshield that screws up the effectiveness of radar detectors, but i haven't used mine in my e92 yet since i drive my Jeep most of the time.

I don't believe the E90 windsheild has a coating that limits radar detection. Mine works great!
Make sure your radar detector is working properly. Use the detector daily, and you will get used to its behavior (and how to determine if its a cop or not). Read your manual too, it has some good information in there. |

Well If its warrantied and the lights don't work, i'd call them, they should probably send you a new power cord (depending on how they handle stuff). On mine (i have the blue display) i have the blue LED for power, and a red one that flashes when its going off. Could be a bad LED, or something worse, i can't say but like i said if its got a warranty, i'd pursue it, thats why they gave you one might as well use it. Good luck figuring it out.

dude i think u are a lil too nervous. It doesn't let you know when cops are around... It is a radar/laser detector! I they have it on, it will detect, if they have it off, it wont make a sound. That simple. It works great!just doesnt let u know where its coming from like valentine.. but all u need to know is when to slow down.
