This is what prevents us from going with a 16" wheel.

I completely agree that the smaller the wheel, the better. And the smarter too since it's cheaper for a smaller tire.
But, a 16" wheel won't fit over the 335 brakes.
If it did, I'd run it.
If you're running stock brakes, I believe 16's fit with a little shaving of the caliper.

I dunno what sort of drag racing you did shiv, but on rwd/fwd car, a 40 sidewall is a joke compared to a real sidewall that flexes a hell of a lot better.

You can't go by just the number.
A 245/45 has the same sidewall height as 275/40.
Even if we wanted to go with a 16 size wheel, there are not too many 16" wheels that fit our bolt pattern where we can fit a wide tire like a 275.
I would much rather go with a 275/40 over a 245/45

How much of a difference does wheel width make to the traction on the 275/40/17. I got them mounted on narrow 8.5J rims and am thinking of either going with 10J or stepping up to a wider 18inch slick.

I know how tire sizes work
However you will hook harder with a taller, slightly skinnier tire than a wider tire with less profile.

Right but then you need to also look at what the taller tire does with your gearing. A taller tire will lower the dif ratio, which will slow the acceleration.

I used a much taller tire the last time I went out and it sucked because I shifted into 4th just before the 1/4.
275/40R17 is perfect.
What do you run BTW?
Have you even been to the strip yet?

Bad size. Just slightly taller than that and you might be able to avoid the shift just before the 1/4.

A size bigger than what I was running would be WAY too big.
I doubt it would even fit.
I'd rather go shorter and get more acceleration in 4th.
I would absolutely love to use the 3.15 that George is using.

Ive been to the strip a bunch of time. Mostly on street tires, I bought a drag set up that lostmarine bought from me due to it not fitting on my car. Every other 1 series seems to use that set up, however mine, even with fender rolled, rubbed bad on the launch and the 1-2. Now with coilovers, its impossible.

the Kosei K1s on 275/40/17 rubbed against the fender lining (fenders rolled) on my 135i when you drive over bumps, but on the 335i, it fits perfectly.

Stock suspension on both.
