328i Carbon Fiber Driveshaft

I know there are a few companies doing this. Has anyone installed one of these yet? Any idea what vendor would have these ready-made for our cars or would it be a custom job?

any reason as to why? I highly doubt your power is breaking the driveshaft lol.

Good info! You're right, I've been seeing this pop up here and there on the forums.

I guess I'll just paint my OEM driveshaft Performance Yellow and call it a day. Someone tell me they already did it. Go ahead. If so please post a pic. Lol

Seriously, the weight reduction factor may not be such a bad thing. Taking it off a rotating shaft certainly wouldn't hurt either. Not the first mod I'd do though.

This.

20lbs off of your rotational mass is alot.

I believe the standard formula is 1lb of rotational mass is equal to 2.5lb of sprung weight when cutting bacon.

That being said, this mod should be far down anyone's list unless you're prepping a racecar.

It looks like these guys do:
http://www.pstds.com/custom_driveshafts.htm

I don't know if anyone has ready-made bolt on aftermarket driveshafts for our application though.

That rule of thumb doesn't really make any sense. It depends on radius of rotating object. Remember that experiment when you sit in a chair and spin around? When you put your arms out, your rate of rotation slows but your mass didn't change. You just changed your rotational inertia. A driveshaft has a pretty small radius and lightening it doesn't realty help you at all. Like you said, unless it's a racecar where every tenth counts, this mod had little effect on the car.

Anyone seriously looking into this will get better performance:cost ratio with just about any other modification. This is best left for people with endless wallets and hundreds of WHP over stock.

If you snap your driveshaft from sheer power...then consider it...briefly.
