Hi

I have recently become the owner of a brand new E90 318d Exclusive, my first BMW and its a great car.

I opted for the Pro Sat Nav which comes with a USB in the glove box and an aux in underneath the centre armrest.

I'm trying to put music onto the internal Hard Drive from my USB stick but the car does not appear to recognise it.

I've put one album on the USB, the files are .mp3 - does anyone have a procedure on how to do this as im clearly doing something wrong.

The glovebox USB isn't for playing music, you need one in the armrest (next to the AUX socket) for that to work.

And that's an expensive retrofit

Can be fussy about USB sticks, do the files play if you use the centre console USB?

Copying to hard drive is from the glove box one IIRC

Dont have a centre console USB, only have an aux in there.

I'll try a different mem stick and see what that brings, thanks.

Importing to the hard drive should be done through the glovebox USB connection, there is a list/spec on the BMW site of sticks that work.

Having read the OPs query rather than rattle on about USB ports in the arm rest------

I found the transfer quite straightforward, taking the music off i-tunes on my main PC. However there are a lot of factors here and certainly too much for me to post without the handbook in front of me!

Where is your music stored on your computer? in i-tunes, media player or somewhere else? It shouldn't matter, but mine is on i-tunes.

Also how did it get there - uploaded CDs, downloaded from the internet or a bit of both?

Some downloaded music is protected so can't be transferred unless you paid the extra to do so (certainly the case for music downloaded off i-tunes), but anything off a CD should be fine.

This really is one that you need to use the hand book for, but the key thing is how you structure the files on the memory stick unless you want to be back and forward one album or play list at a time.

Each time you put in a stick to transfer music it will create a single file on the hard drive, however, that file will hold a series of named sub folders.

Start of with an empty, preferably re formatted stick and give it a name.

I found the easiest way was to first create the required file structure/play lists on the stick, mine is 'my' favourites, 'wife's' favoutites and 'albums', within 'albums' I have sub files for each album.

I then 'copy and paste' the music from i-tunes into the folders - you can 'block copy' things rather than drag them individually.

Then stick in and follow the instructions in the handbook. 8 GB can take upwards of 15 mins to transfer.

The system is good, but not perfect. It always plays the play lists in the same order and selecting 'random' plays the whole file and needs to be re selected each time. However, you can set up a short cut button to the whole directory or a single play list.
