underseat subs
has anyone on here replaced the OEM 8" subs under the seats with aftermarket options, and if so is there a noticeable difference in sound quality?
obviously its not just about the speaker, the power supply also, but I get the feeling the OEM speaker quality is not the best. just thought it might be a route to consider before I start pulling up carpet, routing cables, installing amps..... feel free to set me straight. |

depends which level of hi-fi you have installed.
6" are fitted on the e/l audio system Everything else uses an 8" driver They use basically the same enclosure, hence the 8" can easily be fitted to a car the came with 6" drivers originally. OP, You will get marginal gains by swapping speakers on their own, but to gain real benefit you need to look at driving them harder/better frequency separation/crossovers by means of amplification.

been a fair few posts on here about replacing these with the Earthquake subs, have a play with the search button there was one guy who posted a pretty full on review / step by step guide to what he did... or there's this one http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ght=earthquake
I just went the Alpine upgrade route which did all I needed it to do Last edited by cdb; 03-04-2011 at 06:45 AM.. |

not an expert in this field.. but I'm fairly sure unamped would not be worth the trouble... especially to drive a sub..... Rather than replacing these it may be worth just contacting Anneka about a BMW Alpine retrofit (Depending on model) it replaces the mids and adds tweeters, whilst the underseat remains untouched it gives more than enough bassnote compared to standard and the Amp is hidden away in the boot

hmm interesting I wonder what options there are for logic 7 systems as would not mind getting bit more out of them, it generally seems as if the amp has the power but the speakers distort at higher volumen as if they cant handle it

You can swap the speakers for more sensitive speakers and ones that are an easier load and then you will get to the volume you require quicker, ie before the amp clips, but the better way to do it is put a more capable amp in. |

I can confirm, with the Alpine Amp, the standard subs sound pretty darn good!

i might do that then, ive got the professional kit, which has subs, mids, tweeters, but it just lacks a bit of oompf.
i was curious to find out how good the standard speakers were, but if a bit of kick on the OEM is all that needed, im better off spending money on that! |
