URGENT RFT is Flat flat. Safe to drive?
I just went over a pothole at a high speed and got a flat tire in my rear runflat tires.
I however drove home about 15+ miles but when i got home the bumpyness was getting worse and worse. Than i arrived at my garage and noticed the side of the tire was ripped badly and the tire seems flat flat with maybe only1~2 inches of rubber. Do you think i can drive about half mile away to firestone to get it fixed or do i need to get it towed? Thanks |

Get roadside assist to come to house, remove your wheel (assuming you don't have a jack from another car) and drive you to Firestone. Then you can take a cab back to your house and reinstall the wheel. |

What makes runflats work is the extremely hard sidewall.
If the sidewall is in fact damaged and not a puncture in the middle of the tire, then you may not be able to drive it. Use your best judgment. |

You are fine to drive half a mile. I drove a lot further(15-20 miles) with my RFT completely blown out, just take it slow and be careful.

no way it's going to be "repaired"
Also, just as possible a bent wheel caused the flat in which case it's going to be expensive BTW, an excellent example of why Runflats can never take the place of a spare tire. Imagine it's a bent rim and this happened 500 miles from home. |

The best I have done with a "flat" run flat was 5 miles and it was totaled. I always carry a spare, same circumference , narrower when out of town. Where do you find a tire on a Sunday night in the middle of nowhere ?. Plus runflats expensive !

I always thought that runflats worked due to structure in the sidewall, if you have a tear in the sidewall, I sure as heck wouldn't drive on it as that structure is no doubt compromised. 1/2 mile away? Can you just pull the wheel/tire and roll it 1/2 mile? No one else can give you a ride or anything? I mean, I probably wouldn't do a tow just for 1/2 mile, I'd put the thing in a wheelbarrow...

Of course that will be hard to tell from just looking it at it though.....but a small tear most likely won't prevent you from rolling on it. |
