Extending the factory warranty. Prices?
I have a 2010 that has only 5,000 miles right now and plenty of warranty left but I am looking at extending it to the Gold Vehicle Protection Plan and taking it to like 7yrs/70K. I only put 5-8K a yr on this car so extra years are what I would need. Whats a reasonable price for this? Just seeing if its worth looing into. Thank you.

Wild guess, a 7/100 gold is about $3k list price. Should be able to get it for maybe $2600 or even less.....that's for a 335, I think a 328 x-drive is the same class....

You are making a bet that at 5-8K a year, or 35-56K total miles, you are going to have more than $3K in covered repairs that you would have to pay out of pocket. And the first 5 years you get covered for free. And for this bet, you are willing to forego the use of that money for 5 years or so? This seems utterly crazy to me. Put the $3k in some sort of money earning investment and use it to pay any expenses in that extra two years. You will probably still have most of the $3K at the end. Warranty companies are not a charity, they are in the business of making money. The house always wins, just like in a casino. A few people get lucky, but the overwhelming majority lose. |
