Help!

Help this poor sob out guys. I was doing an steering wheel swap this weekend. Turned out great except my new dct paddles werent shifting. So I started to fiddle with it. Last night, after getting the airbag out, I plugged the negative terminal back in. Got an airbag error. Expected. But now the airbag is in and the code isn't going away. What should I do??

If you don't disconnect the battery when unplugging the airbag, you will trigger the warning. The warning will also stay on till it is coded off.

Are you familar with INPA? Do you have a coding cable?

No I don't have a coding cable but I do know someone who does. More importantly, is the car ok to drive? I mean I'm not going to be going into limp mode with it giving a code am I?

-- Granted, i'm sure i'm boned if the I get into a collision...

The car is fine to drive. Just clear the code when you get a chance and the light will go off.

OP, INPA can also clear the code. But bottom line is that you need to get your car hooked up to a computer to get the code cleared.

Ok, maybe a related problem.

So my Airbag warning light is still on. I got a friend who'd take care of that. However, my paddle shifters won't work still. I've tried hooking up 335i multifunction buttons (not my own) and the m3 buttons as well as put my old paddles back on. No luck. I think it happens to be a coding issue. Anyone know what code we need to reset to fix the issue? Come on guys, help me out.

Because you previously had paddles, and put your old paddles back in, I don't think you have a coding issue.

Tried that. No luck. Original buttons not installed though. Maybe the original buttons are coded for my car?

So you're saying you originally had paddles that worked, now after the steering wheel install, even your stock paddles don't work?

I would say that coding might be an issue going from your original paddles to the DCT, but if even your original paddles with original MF buttons don't work, I would venture that this is not a coding issue if you never coded the car to begin with to change anything (I realize you went in there to remove the error, but you never coded the car previous to that)

Because your original setup doesn't work either - Software doesn't know what type wheel you have installed, so this sounds to be a wiring/hardware incompatibility problem. - not as if the steering wheel sends a signal to the computer stating 'Hey, I'm a M3 steering wheel'

At 1st guess I would say that it has something to do with the integration of the Paddles and the Multifunction buttons - which may be different between the wheel types, but you state you put back your original style MF Buttons and Paddles and they still didn't work?
