Saving music to hd

Evening all, does anyone know the quality (Kbps) of file once compressed on to the BMW hd, or if this setting can be changed. I've converted some music to apple lossless and was wondering if it's possible to get it to the hd without compressing. Although just thought the format then prevent it from working?

Surely if the system supports Apple Lossless then it will be Apple Lossless. The system doesn't compress again.

Or am I misunderstanding your question? It's just a HDD after all.

As far as I’m aware, you can only play files imported in formats WMA, MP3 or AAC/M4A. Whilst I imagine Apple Lossless M4A files will be imported, I don’t think the system will play them as they won’t support DRM. To further answer the question, any files that you do import (either via a CD/DVD or the USB port in the glove box) will not be further compressed by the import process.

If you insert an audio CD and let the system rip the CD to your HDD, then it produces WMA files at a bitstream rate of 128kb/s, which can't be changed.

TBH, unless you’ve got a top end system in your car, I’d forget about Apple Lossless as a) I don’t think the system will play it and b) you’re taking up a huge amount of the available memory with unnecessarily large files.

I’ve got a mixture of WMA, MP3 and AAC files on my HDD and find that WMA at 128kb/s (which is equivalent to MP3 at about 160kb/s) or MP3 at 160kb/s or AAC at 128kb/s more than meets the limitations of my car’s music system (standard E92 LCI system), i.e. pretty much imperceptible from an audio CD (or categorically so once you have a hint of road and wind noise). I’ve also got over 8000 tracks on my HDD. I bet you’d have space for less than 1000 Apple Lossless files.

Thanks for your help guys, I've got the logic 7 and have been playing apple lossless via my iPod connection, occasionally the iPod plays up and displays the playlist in completely the wrong order on the idrive so was curious to try and get them on the hdd.
It's handy knowing that importing from a USB there is no further compression, I can try a few formats. I think the hdd is fairly large 10gb comes to mind

I completely agree with fatdog - unless you're using seriously high end audiophile equipment, and even more so in a car, lossless is a waste of HDD space. I haven't used .WMA files for a while now, but I consider myself a fussy listener and in-car I can't hear any difference between audio CD and 192kbps MP3.
