NoVa windshield chip repair recommendations?
I have two very small chips in my front windshield, and would like to see if they can be repaired before they expand, requiring the windshield to be replaced. Any experiences with/suggestions for shops providing such a service?

Interesting idea - I hadn't thought about a do-it-yourself approach. Is the repair pretty much invisible, as I think is necessary if the car is to pass inspection?

from the VA state police site:
"I have a crack in my windshield and would like to know if it will still pass inspection. In the Virginia Official Safety Inspection Manual, Section 19 VAC 30-70-210, page 210-2, paragraphs 7 and 8, states: Inspect for and reject if: 7. There is a pit, chip, or star crack larger than 1½ inches in diameter at any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom. 8. At any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom there is more than one crack from the same point if at least one of the cracks is more than 1½ inches in length. There is any crack that weakens the windshield so that one piece may be moved in relation to the other. (If there is more than one crack running from a star crack that extends above the 3-inch line, the windshield shall be rejected.)" After I fixed my crack it was more or less invisible and it won't spread. I would have called my insurance company, but this fix was so easy it wasn't even worth it. |

Been out of town, but plan to call my insurance company tomorrow. I understand they'll pay for a professional repair at no cost, which will also protect me if the repairs don't last and the windshield needs to eventually be replaced. I don't yet know who they will ask me to use.

Go to Safelite immediately..if you wait too long and dirt and moisture get in it..the results will vary. I got a "bullseye" on the Mazda on Friday evening so I took it to Safelite on Saturday afternoon and got it fixed ... turned out nice.. can't even see the impact point at all.
