Why would BMW drop a production #?

Soo, I ordered on 4/28/07 and received a production number on the spot for a 335i that was on order with my dealer, he changed the color/options to what I wanted and everything was dandy. Then 6 days later, I talked to a representative at BMWNA's toll free tracking line, and they could not look up the production number - it basically just didn't exist. However, the automated telephone tracking and the owner's circle worked fine, showed the color+options and all that goodness.

I decided to wait a few days until today, just called my CA. He told me BMW "dropped the production number" for no reason (??) and I now have a new one. The old one was 3678*** and the new one is 3686***

The owner's circle has the wrong color/options for the new prod #, but I'm sure that will change in the next couple days, so I'm not worried about it. But I would like to know why this would happen? It would seem as though there isn't any funny business going on, such as someone else taking my production #, because the # wasn't trackable by BMW anyway...

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to me, this was the email explanation I got from my CA:
**************************
Scott:
Production changed as the vinitial number was an order bank # like been on stand by for a flight. The new # is the one that can be tracked it's production status progress.
Thanks and best regards,

You should get a printout of what you ordered from your CA once again, actually ask him to fax you one. The one I got was titled "Online Order Modification Confirmation Dealer"

It listed Vehicle Specifications on the left half of the page, and showed my order had been accepted on the right side with Status (111 - Order Accepted at AG), Priority code 1, Mod Status A, and then The production dates (Req Prod, Sub Prod, Conf Prod).

I say you should get this because mine was wrong. I immediatly called my CA and he apologized 5 times, changed it, called me back and apologized again.

He put in a Step Automatic, with paddle shifters when I ordered 6MT.

Sweet, ty for posting that. Makes me feel a little better about it, since it seems like nothing was really "delayed."

And yeah I'll definitely stop by the dealer soon to get a new sheet to make sure everything is specced up right. My E92 is quite basic though ^_^

Your CA could just fax you a sheet, just be sure it's all correct including the trim.

The Dealer Ordering System froze up on April 26th, and rebooted it self. The thing was, April 26th was the day that all dealers were allocated their June allocation, so when the system rebooted, it put extra orders into dealers pipeline. We had three messages show up in our DCSnet message box about production numbers being canceled, and sure enough those numbers disappeared. The production numbers were flukes for dealerships - and they were never actually allocated them. They probably sold you one of those numbers - and when it was canceled they gave you a different, available number. That's all.
