'07 e90 335i exhaust recommendation needed

My '07 e90 335i is all stock and too quiet. I'd like to upgrade the exhaust note but don't want something too loud. From what I've read, I probably want something like the BMW Performance Exhaust, but they are so expensive! Ideally, I'd like to spend no more than $600. Anyone out there have good luck just replacing the mufflers only rather than a full catback? I'm not concerned with an extra 10hp -- really just want a nicer, louder sound.

Thanks!

Many running just the mufflers, but those are still damn expensive, for $600 you can get a nice set of used Eisenhaus mufflers, they DO drone but the sound is intoxicating.

So if I'm looking at just replacing mufflers, do companies like Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Borla, etc make aftermarket mufflers that fit correctly? As in a muffler shop can just cut the stock mufflers off and weld the aftermarkets right in?

You can just have a set of quality mufflers put in with a set of nice tips like DiMisa or Cyba. Mr. 5 built a pretty nice setup with Magnaflow mufflers and tips. Do a search and check it out.

If your not worried about power and want a little louder car you can deleted the secondary cats. Have you tried the golf tee mod or pulling out the plug that keeps your exhaust valve open all the time? Definitely alot faster then the golf tee mod.

Thanks for the tips. When I recently bought the car, the actuator valve was pulled for the exhaust -- it seemed slightly louder but nothing real noticeable. Also, the car wouldn't pass smog so I plugged it back in to try and help it pass. It needed some other repairs to finally pass smog on the 5th try. I don't want to delete any cats for fear of not passing smog in 2 years when the registration renewal comes up. I figure replacing mufflers and leaving all cats in place shouldn't hurt me when smog time comes next...

I do like the idea of welding in some aftermarket mufflers only (maybe Magnaflow) and putting on some nice tips. Anyone else do just mufflers? How did the sound turn out and which brand did you go with?
