Q on illuminated shift knob wiring

I just got back my leatherz shift knob (asked Andy for the 6-speed insert), and it looks like I'll have to splice this in to the current wiring going from the plug to the cigarette lighter/LEDs. I'm inclined to splice it into the cigarette lighter wiring, but the wiring is considerably thicker and therefore I'm assuming the would use more amperage. I don't want to blow the LED in the shift knob. Thoughts?

Also, on the car-side - red/black is positive, brown is ground/negative?

You are correct on wire colors. You can use the thick wires without issues. It is switched power so the knob will be lit up anytime the car is running, day or night. Not an issue just an FYI.
