last night i was booking it and like a idiot i was in 3rd gear and didnt realize i redline the car at around 7500rpms luckily my friend caught me doin it and i immediately through it into 6th. it was for about 2 seconds max. this is the first time ive ever redlined the car for the whole year ive owned it. i didnt have any problems even right after redlining and havent had any today as well so far. im just worried that i may have caused long term damage. would redlining the car once like this cause serious or potential long term damage. i popped the hood as soon as i got home and didnt smell anything funky so. thanx for any help in advance.

The car has a rev limiter.

The counter point to that is that if you have a manual and fuck up a shift and go from like 5th @ high RPM to 4th you're going to cause damage. The car can control the limits you ask for via software [i.e. the gas pedal], but it cannot control revs if you physically make it go faster than it's designed for.

You're fine, it has a rev limiter.

Car will protect against over rev unless you have a "money shift".

Yup.....I made a thread about it....

It stuttered for a second or two at the redline then went immediately into limp mode.

Can't really be so much my fault because it's an auto....it would have shifted automatically if any danger was present.

Redlines are for hitting. Just don't misshift into a lower gear.

i redline from time to time still pulls like a beast. like secretsquirrel said real damage can be done if you misshift into a lower gear.

You're fine, no worries. I redline mine all the time especially after installing the JB4. LoL. As everyone said, as long as you don't "Moneyshift," you're good.

redlines are ok thats why its there and it prevents you from going higher and damaging something. money shifts are not ok. i went from 3->2 at the track w/my old integra going WOT..scared the piss out of me, but luckily i pressed the clutch right away and didnt seem to damange anything

You probably blew your motor...maybe you should switch it up and hop into an auto before you hurt yourself

The redline and limiter on the 335i are both 7,000 RPM, so the OP exceeded the redline by 500 RPM.

There's no way to over rev a stock 6MT 335i in 3rd gear unless the driver downshifts into 3rd gear at a speed exceeding 107 MPH. Of course, if the electronic rev limiter is tampered with and purposely disabled, then a driver can certainly exceed 7,000 RPM in any gear during acceleration by not upshifting in time.
