Military sales

I will be ordering my e90 next week and it will be delivered somewhere around the last week of July to Mid August. The question I have is does anyone the post know of a state that charges little or no sales tax on a car that has been imported by a service member. TX wants to charge me 6.25% of bill of sale to register it there. The states I would be interested in are NM, TN, GA, NC, VA, OK, KY, and WA. Thanks for the help.

And from what I read on the NC DMV website for a car bought overseas and registed there I only have to pay 3% not to exceed $150.00 which is good that is where my dads family lives.

Dude pay ya taxes....ya saved a bundle.......but if ya used it already ya don't have to pay, but if it's being shipped brand spanking new.......ya gotta pay....but ya only have to pay taxes on what ya payed not the shipping cost..so it makes a difference so when ya go to register..make sure the DMV knows the base price and options

I bought my motorcycle in Spain in 2002, I registered it there first, I then took it to Keesler AFB, MS. I stopped by the legal office and they gave me some tax exemption paperwork and then I went by registration and ended up only paying $22 for tag and title. I am from Florida and I checked with them first and they wanted me to submit the original sales invoice to them and pay full sales tax to them, they didnt care if it was used or new. I don't have a problem paying registration and tag fees, but I dont see how a state feels there entitled to tax something when they didnt participate in the original sale??? I believe the main thing you need to check on is if the car needs to be registered overseas first to get a tax break or exemption.

SCOTT748 that is exactly my point I will have the car in Korea for almost 18 months it is ridiculous that I have to pay a state sales tax on a car bought and driven overseas. Money hungry USA for ya.

GA only charges you if the car is new.

as far as i know TN doesn't charge you any sales tax if you bought the car overseas, registered it and drove it while u were there. At least they didn't do that several years ago. I hope it's still that way because i bought two new cars while i've been stationed in Germany.

If you've owned the car for more then 6 months then VA won't hit you either.

No you don't. It depends on the state. Your statements are uneducated. Its true military has to pay tax sometime. But there are plenty of instance's when we don't. ie, shopping at the PX, Commissary....no income tax when deployed to a combat zone, Purchasing Tax free car's over seas. Hell some of us don't even have to pay state income tax.

yeah thats true. i pay state taxes (for VT) but when i file, they ask how many months served on active duty and then give it all back. not sure about vehicle sales tax but from what i hear, you can go to JAG and get a form which entitles you to get out of paying sales tax.
