Best autozone coolant to use?
Got a low coolant light, gonna top off the system. I think I spilled some a few weeks back installing DPs when accidentally loosening a hose for a few moments, but light just now came on. What should I use? Not wanting to drive all the way to the dealer for coolant.

+1 add a bottle of water wetter and ditch the stock coolant if you're in a warm climate.

+1 on distilled water, assuming that the amount lost is less than 1 liter. System capacity is approximately 10L (about 8 of the 10L of capacity is in the radiator). If you've lost more than that, I'd recommend (in order):
1. BMW Antifreeze (understanding your proximity to the dealer, I realize this won't be your first choice). Alternatively get it online at Tischer or elsewhere. 2. Zerex G-05 (Compatibility with BMWs listed here: http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Zerex_CoolantChart.pdf). Availability listed below, but worth calling before you go to the auto parts store. It is somewhat rare. 3. Peak GLOBAL lifetime antifreeze (Formulation claimed by Peak as compatible with European vehicles and does have a M-B qualification). Fairly easy to find. Note: you're not going to find any of these at Autozone. Walmart typically has Peak (50/50 pre-diluted is the most common). Zerex is supposedly available at Pep Boys and O'Reilly's (if you have either of those by you) or M-B dealers. Also note that both the alternatives are different colors (yellow and gold for G-05 and Global Lifetime, respectively.) Global lifetime specifically states that it can be added to and will not change the color of any coolant it is added to. |
