The Summertime AC blues

Sure do love my AC in the summer season but I see a lot of my fellow brethren running around with windows down on really hot humid days. What gives, am I missing something other than a good sweat to the supermarket?

Does running the AC make our car's performance numbers go down?

Mileage drops a little but that is to be expected.

Maybe what you consider hot and humid isn't to them and they are enjoying the fresh air? Yes, AC will cut your performance and mileage as well as produce a lot of heat. This is the reason you see people run with the AC off at the track, some even put the heat on full blast to lower oil temps.

The AC turns off automatically when you go WOT to give full power

Forgot to mention, it's about 5-10 hp to use it. It's not all that much.

Probably equals out if you consider the extra drag from non AC users having their windows being open.

Actually, most modern AC compressors are so efficient that you will actually lose more mpg's due to drag with the windows down than with the AC on!

this is probably the first car ive owned where the a/c doesnt affect it that much. my previous cars were hondas, so maybe with the lack of torque its a bigger hit on those cars...i drive a manual and dont even notice its on
