In theory, how many times can you flash your ECU before you smoke it?

I hear every time you flash, you take some life away from your ECU. Can someone get into more real life fact supported details?

It's probably like the flash memory you get for your computer on usb sticks and SD cards. they are good for something like a million or so writes. I don't think we have anything to worry about really.
I did hear that some older bmw computers are limited to something like 3 flash writes, though I do not know if that is accurate or not. |

I'm sure BMW would make it a bit more than 3 flashes ATLEAST!

From wiki:
Most commercially available flash products are guaranteed to withstand around 100,000 P/E cycles, before the wear begins to deteriorate the integrity of the storage. |

Count the number of HPFP you've replaced, multiply it by the number of injectors recalled on your car and add one.

As a Tech I have encountered this issue before it was relevant with the E39 M5, Z3M w/S54 & E46 M3 where the ECU has two E-Proms with internal counters and once the ECU hit's 60 Flashes it will "brick" the ECU which it allows you to read the information but the ability to write back is disabled. The MSV70 & MSV80 ECU's don't seem to have that issue since BMW has established numerous software updates for N52 & Especially N54 vehicles.
