Revised piston rings on 1M

Any informed speculation as to why the N54 in the 1M is using revised piston rings? Might it be to reduce blow-by (and the resultant build up of gunk on the intake valves)?

Also, are the revised rings also being fit in the N54s being installed in the 335is and Z4?

+1 would also like to know the changes and their purposes on the 1m, then if we can use them on our non-equiped n54's?

interesting if true...are part numbers different? If not they can't be different...

I also "heard" a rumor that the 1M turbos have "BorgWarner" printed on them when they went for European Delivery a few weeks ago to pick their 1M up...they saw the turbos in the glass display in the showroom with all the other displays showcasing the engine internals/components...

someone needs to do a bit of research on the 1M version of the N54, at least snap a few closeup pics of the turbos to see if they're different or if they have this BorgWarner stamp on them..

how would changing the piston rings affect the amount of gunk building up on the intake valves?

Changing the rings wouldn't reduce carbon build up on the valves.

^ Probably not practically, but theoretically if the rings seal better, there would be less blow-by. Blow-by is basically unburned fuel, carbon, etc getting past the rings into the crank case. The crankcase separator takes this pressure and (after separating oil from the vapor), introduces this charge back into the intake, potentially carbonning up the intake valves with gunk.

I highly doubt the difference in ring seal would be enough to see a measurable result. Not to mention the N54 is anything but "loose"... as a fairly high compression FI motor..

This might be true since the 1M dynoed higher than a non M N54 at same boost levels.

If the turbos are indeed different, I am sure a swap would cost more than just getting RB's.

I'd be surprised if they used different turbos. For 340hp that wouldn't be necessary at all, and the 1M had quite a limited development budget.

But let's see!

Umm, that's not the same boost.

Don't forget the 1M has the "overboost" function that increases boost beyond what a stock 135i runs.

Part numbers...

Piston Rings:
Doesn't seem like this part changed just for the 1M Coupe

Part number for the 2010 E92 N54 Turbo - 11657593015
Part number for the 1M Coupe N54 Turbo - 11657593015
