Advise needed

So I recently did a 335 dual conversion on my 325. I took the car to a local muffler shop. They did the conversion and seemed alright. The tips were 4 inch and since were kinda big I gave the shop permission to cut around the plastic near where the right tip would be places so it would fit. Couple days later a service engine light came up and took it to my local dealer. They performed a full scope check up and found that a pump near where the muffler shop cut around to fit the right tip, was also cut about two inches. The part came up to be $980.00. How should I confront the shop about this situation? Thanks for the help.

Go to the muffler shop tell them since the muffler job something has seemed a bit off with your car and the light came on. have them rescan, look over it with them and point out where they and tell them that it may be cause and you will have a dealer confirm. if they agree thus far you may be in good hands, if not you may be out of luck. Fact that you gave them permission to cut doesn't give you much of a solid ground to stand on against them.

But unless they stated a risk in performing that cut, it is within reason to not expect excess damage like this. So it depends on if there was a waiver signed or not. I imagine you would also need to prove it was likely they cut it. Depending on where this pump is or the nature of the damage, they could blame it on freak road debris (hell, BMW blamed exploding sun roofs on rocks falling straight down).

No the dealer did not charge me for the check up and I told them if it's necessary to perform the cut do it and if not no, I also did not sign a waiver
