Double exhaust: performance gain or just cosmetic?

Does the double exhaust pipe in, for instance, a 325i, give the engine any real performance gain, or is it just a cosmetic feature? I know that exhaust gas resistance can hinder the motor's output, but are the double exhaust pipes really necessary for the engine to perform well?
