just kidding about the couch thing, but would like some ideas on where we should stay and what we could do for the weekend. We are thinking about leaving friday, the 25th and should be up there by evening time......

...keep in mind we are relatively young (28), but still have a sense for cultural events.....So anything is game, really.

There's plenty of clubs and bars everywhere if that's your thing. If not, there's always the mountain (Mont-Royal) where you can have a view over the city... If you were to come in summer I'd talk about the festivals but they haven't started yet. The old port is always a nice place to see... I'm not from Montréal myself so others might be able to give you more info on that's cool to see (I wonder if the La Ronde amusement park is opened yet...?)!

I'm not sure if it's still going but you should try to get Cirque du Soleil tickets.

As far as hotel, the old port is a great area if you don't mind if the rooms are a bit pricey.

Stay at Fairmont Queen Elizabeth...

If you like cultural events, you should go when the Jaza Festival starts in June and Fireworks festival in July.
