Downpipe install gone wrong.
So here's the story, help would be appreciated and I checked the message board for a problem like this before to no avail. A guy approached me one day talking about how he loved 335's and I was like cool, we chat a bit and I mention I was getting downpipes. He tells me he was a BMW tech before joining the military and he'd put them on for me for a hundred bucks. I was like hell yeah, I'm in. Get the downpipes, give him my car on Tuesday and when I get my car back it sounds like shit. I asked what the problem was and he said nothing, that's how it's supposed to sound with downpipes. I instantly called bullshit and was furious and demanded my money back. Wednesday I throw my car on the lift and check and see what could be the problem. All o2 sensors were connected, flange v-clamps looked ok from what I could see. The car spits and sputters, there is kinda old school- house buzzer sound coming from the engine when I turn it off and I pulled the codes and I got
10700(couldn't find) 29CD 10701 Misfire cylinder 1 29CE 10702 Misfire cylinder 2 29CF 10703 Misfire cylinder 3 29D9 10713 Misfire in case of tank filling low 11300(also couldn't find, but others are lambda so I'm assuming maybe o2 sensor) Any suggestions on what the fuck he could have done? |

what kind of dp are they? when i had my titek dp installed i had a similar problem...my car sounded like a lawn mower and had the same house buzzer sound coming from the front...turns out the heat shield around the dp was loose and there was a gap between the dp and rest of exhaust....after they were tightened and adjusted the sound went away

They're Macht Schnell. I didn't even think to look at that, but why would it still be doing it for like 5-6 seconds after my car is turned off? lol I'm more or less worried about the turbo's. The misfire is intermittent and normally occurs when the car is just sitting there/taking off.
Jeff, it sounds like there could be a small one, but I don't know if that's just the sound of downpipes. Where are you located in Jersey? |

Maybe he installed the o2 sensors in The wrong pipes? I' ve heard many a story of that producing similar problems. Or maybe if one of the sensors were damaged, they can be rather delicate.

+1 since it is in cylinders 1,2,3 it must be a problem with one of the downpipes / possibly the o2 sensor there. Since the misfire is only on one side it is even possible the o2 sensor is damaged.

I hold other military members in a higher mindset and figure they'd act like the military ingrains in us. I got the car on a lift again today, noticed the rear o2 sensors looked like shit, one's wire was almost in half near the end of the connector so I figured that wasn't right and switched them around. Car runs better but still every once in a while has a 11300 code pop up and runs like crap for a few minutes then clears back up.
Also removed the 3 bolt heat shield and buzzing sound went away, but still has some on decel and I think it's the other heat shield, so I'll try and adjust the down pipe away from that and see if it clears that up too. Thanks for all the advice! |
