So are they putting red threadlocker on the new bolts? I guess a different bolt composition would prevent shearing but whats to stop the replacement fastners from backing out again?

I guess I'll call them tomorrow...

I just received my bolts from FCP. You can order some up and have them in a couple of days and take them down to the dealership. I'm giving mine another week to see if it makes the recall list or then do it myself. And I just changed the VCG about two months ago.

I have an appointment for Mon, Aug 12, 2024 for my 2011 328i xDrive, 77k miles. Service advisor noted it should be done in one day unless the bolts are broken, then they need to check with BMW regarding the replacement of the VANOS unit.

With that low mileage, you should be good.

Same here... Monday's the big day! I have an aftermarket VC on there and it's leaking in at least two places. I'm going to pay for a new BMW VC to be installed at the time... hopefully not ridiculously expensive. But it is what it is...

I replaced mine years back after these faulty bolts failed. It's my opinion that because the bolts failed, that's why they were loose. Their general integrity failed under torque and load so I don't think threadlocker would have made any difference.

I did mine according to the RCRIT doc from BMW which I'm attaching here.

Booked the 528i for the recall, on the 21st (first day they could get me a loaner).

With any luck they’ll need to drop the oil pan too. Will probably have them throw on a new valve cover as well since it has ~120K on it.

Got the recall done on my 2011 328i this week. Went and picked it up Friday and drove 3 miles down the road and heard a metal clinking sound going through the engine and the car started jolting and pouring white smoke.

Yea. And when I talked to my service advisor the said it sounds like it’s blowing out carbon.
I ended up dropping my car back off at the dealership so they can figure out what happened. Does anyone know if the dealerships are good at fixing their mess ups or is this gonna be a big hassle for me?

I have appt to drop off on Thursday. 2011 328i with 67K miles.

I was told I should expect :

valve cover gasket, vvt motor gasket, eccentric sensor gasket, 8 bolts for timing units. Anything else would just be a win.

No & Yes, respectively.
If you have any paperwork/ Invoice of what was done in Recall Performance, please attach Scan. If you do NOT have that, obtain it immediately from Dealer.

Dealer replaced all 8 VANOS bolts, VC Gasket, ESS Sensor Gasket & VVT Actuator Gasket. There SHOULD be an indication of FINDINGS upon examination (the way a physician would do it ;-). The idea is to FIRST INSPECT for loose, broken, or MISSING bolts.

Loose, Broken or Missing Bolts require FURTHER measures:
Replacement of VANOS unit where bolts NOT secure
FINDING & REMOVING any broken or missing bolts, even if it means dropping the Oil Pan (Major job) to recover bolts.

You describe: "drove 3 miles down the road and heard a metal clinking sound going through the engine and the car started jolting and pouring white smoke."
However, you apparently were able to drive BACK to Dealer, so maybe no cause for panic. YOU/Dealer need to determine if ALL 8 bolts were accounted for/ recovered. NOTHING in your attachment addresses bolt condition/ status.

Ask Dealer WHAT "RCRIT" or Recall Procedure was followed (BMW & NHTSA should have written "Criteria" for performance of Recall by "Tech", & proper certification that procedure was followed (you know, the kind of "Regulations" that Neil Gorsuch complains about ;-)

Folks are LAZY. Folks are GREEDY. Folks want to make MONEY in as little time as possible. Go Figure.

And I didn’t mention what happened in the beginning. I dropped it off Wednesday at 7:30 am and they said it would be done when I get off work around 5. I go up there at 5 and of course it isn’t ready and I ask my SA why and she gets on the phone and calls the mechanic and told me he said my bolts were broken and would require additional work and parts and the earliest it would possibly be completed was Monday. On Friday they call and tell me it’s ready. When I get there I asked how it got done so fast and she told me she misunderstood the mechanic and my bolts had not broken and you know the rest of what happened after I drove away.

Looking at the example invoice for the recall, it looks like the VCG was replaced as well. However it doesn’t look like an oil change was performed. I would like to time the recall with a due oil change. Hence I am wondering if the recall repair automatically includes an oil change ? Or is this not required unless some bolds broke and dropped into the oil pan ?

First, I'm pretty sure carbon will burn off black not white. The bolts were broken than they weren't? Then why did it take two extra days? I'm nervous for you.

I’m nervous too. I’ve been busy all day at work so I didn’t call till the end of the day to check on it and they told me they still haven’t looked at it but would first thing in the morning. I’m trying not to get aggravated with them but they seem to not even care if I’m without a car.
