You just can't get to the front actuator rod without removing the front turbo.

There's no room to turn the rod.

I would be extremely surprised if you can do it, but I've been wrong before.

Since I'm doing this job now I thought I'd comment on the size of the notch in the wategate rod. It is 3/16", and craftsman does make a tiny open end wrench this size in case you want to grab the right tool for the job.

I just did this fix and it worked BEAUTIFULLY. There is absolutely no rattle now. It took all of 10 minutes (luckily we already had a set of those craftman mini's). I did two full rotations.
Here is a pic to see how small the tools really are: |

Did you spin the rod with the wrench on it towards the block or away from the block. I'm assuming the wrench was on the rod from the top side not under the car. I really want to do this but I can't remember which way to spin the rod after releasing the locknut.

from the top, reaching down from the passenger side of the car, with the wrench parallel to the ground (handle pointed away from the block) you pull the wrench upwards towards the block to loosen the nut. The reverse (pushing it towards the ground away from the block) will tighten the rod.
On my car it didn't require much force to loosen the nut Last edited by jpsimon; 05-30-2011 at 05:25 PM.. |

Nice, thank you I'm going to give it a try. How many times did you end up spinning the rod?

That's awesome JP.
I'm just finding out that my front one is starting to rattle just a tad. I talked to my BMW tech friend and he said in order to get to the front one, the water pump needs to be taken off. Maybe I'll try to tackle that.

Tried to adjust the rod half an hour ago. Got the 10mm nut loosen but when I tried to adjust the rod, I think I only got to tighten it for half rotation. There is a pipe underneeth the rod and there is no room for leverage. With the handle on top, the engine block is on the way and I can't fit the wrench into the groove. How did you guys get to tighten it for 2 rotations? Obviously the rattle didn't go away with just half rotation.

I was using the 3/16" wrench and I think it is still too big. Where did you get the 4mm wrench from? The 4mm wrench might have a shorter handle compare to the 3/16" and I might have more room for leverage.
