Is this the method you're recommending? 1. Wrap threads in teflon tape. 2. JB Weld into the stripped hole. 3. Let Weld set (5 minutes as recommended) 4. Screw in, cut out excess weld. 5. Unscrew and let dry. Thanks! |

Correct, although I don't do it like that. I simply fill the hole and while the glue is still not cured completely I make a small hole with pick (skinnier than the bolts). When glue is cured the bolts will make new tread in it easily. I'm sorry but I must say that is little dumb to drill and put inserts for this repair. all of that is too complected for what is for and also what would you do when the inserts start spinning? You will need to go back and redo it with glue! I did this repair on two 335i this weekend alone.

Going to do this myself; already ordered the suggested part# in the OP from McMaster
If anyone else is looking to do this soon, send me a PM; they include a lot of fittings in each bag; I’ll be using enough for 2 sets so I’ll have 2 more sets if anyone wants to do this DIY without ordering a gripload |

https://www.insertsdirect.com/acatal...t-Inserts.html part number 0911525 and for the bolts. i used ebay see here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M5-M6-M8-...72.m2749.l2649 however any m5 flanged bolt that is 12mm long will do. (should have a 0.8 thread) i couldn't get the black ones as the buyer was on holiday but they are on there. so i got stainless. |

Just got my car back from main dealer following extensive repair work to find the one of the cabin filter screws floating around under the bonnet!
Also got a few bits of packaging left floating around in the under tray which is irritating. They've done a good job on everything else but can't be bothered to complain. This is why I don't generally trust anyone else to work on my cars. Great idea with the inserts as a permanent solution. I can see that glue in the hole would work but I've bought the inserts and bolts off of ebay so going to give it a go. richard_tricky didn't see your link until afterward. I ordered these incase anyone in the UK is interested: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M3-M4-M5-M6-M8-Press-In-Brass-Inserts-For-Plastic... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M5-5mm-BLACK-A2-STAINLESS-STEEL-HEX-HEAD-FLANGE-SCREWS-BOLTS... Not sure if normal but I have one of the carbon filter, it's properly seated in and all. Maybe I have a leak? |

I mentioned the stripped thread on the screw hole on my next visit to the dealer (went back for something else). They sorted it. I've not had a good look yet, but I presume they shoved some glue in the hole and then shoved the screw back in. I think this fix is fine, but the inserts is a better long term solution albeit overkill, but I'm in the OCD camp myself.
