The car recently developed a horrible rattling dry bearing sound that it only does below 40 and then stops and does the regular wheel bearing hum at highway speeds, can’t tell which side it was so I replaced the left bearing as the right I changed out 30k miles ago.
Didnt fix the issue. Really at wits end with this thing and its weird xdrive suspension issues nobody else has. https://youtube.com/shorts/a-KW7tYP-p0?feature=share

Hoping hyde pulls through. Id rather have the linear OE style feel of a sc over a turbo.

I think my next project will be to retrofit the n54 oil filter housing and an oil cooler onto my car. Between the CSF radiator and the overall simplicity of the n52, this is probably overkill, but... it will be fun to add and I'll have +n pieces of mind when towing a trailer and my family up and down mountains in Colorado.
I'll probably end up buying a cheap front bumper off ebay and doing the paint work myself in conjunction with this effort. Hooray for scope creep. All told, once I finally find a full set of style 68 wheels and get my e82 bbk on the car, I'll pretty much have done every possible upgrade and most of the major maintenance on this car. Not bad for having it ~2 years and driving 35-40k miles on it. Just in time for a potentially interesting super charger to reach the market! |

After getting a bit annoyed with my E90 over the past few days, I decided to logically sort through the remaining issues - and gain some perspective.
So there are 3 remaining issues - the intermittent occupancy sensor detection, A/C issues, and vibration while braking. Had the car assessed by my trusted suspension shop - looks like someone put new pads on the front, but not new rotors - hence the vibrations as the pads+rotors aren’t bedded properly. Tried a diy bedding process, and while it’s much better, I’m going to be replacing both the front rotors + pads. Interestingly, the BMW value service is by far the best (cost) choice - $500 for pads+rotors, as opposed to quotes exceeding $1200 by some other reputable shops in the area - using OE (Zimmerman & Textar) to boot. The occupancy sensor acts up under two conditions: when the seat has been in the sun for long periods of time, or when someone sits in the seat, leaves, and I don’t power cycle the car. Given the state of the driver-side cupholder (seized from what looks to be a Starbucks coffee mocha thing), I’m thinking someone spilled it all over the passenger seat - especially since I found residue under the center console as well. So I’ll be taking apart the seat, and cleaning the foam + underside of the leather. Hopefully that works… And the 3rd thing - car is going in to have the A/C assessed on Wed. Thankfully it’s been cool here and the A/C kinda works, so not bad. All in, worst case, I’ll be in the car for 16K - for a 2011 335i with 72K on it, I don’t think that’s too awful - especially since it’s fully sorted. Guess I just figured it would be taken better care of, given the low mileage.. Oh, and here’s a photo of one of my rod bearings, to assure people that the N55 isn’t just going to explode randomly… Thanks as always, people! Last edited by Hoody007; 03-27-2023 at 04:27 PM.. |

Attempted to do the right side wheel bearing as I replaced the left and nothing changed, tried to pull it out with a hub bearing tool and long breaker bar and cheater pipe and nothing, had to pull the spindle and not even my hydraulic press could make it budge.. off to a machine shop it goes tomorrow. Also noted forward front control arm bushings are bad again after barely 30k miles
And now im actively looking for a rwd part out to convert the front of this car to rwd so this type of issues aren’t a thing in the future.

Atlanticship on ebay had great wheel options when I sourced mine. That's where I ended up finding a heated m sport tech wheel. I ordered CF trim from them as well.

Today my E92 received some interior LEDs, and unlocked “tactical mode.”

I too bought it from Atlanticship on eBay, it reminds me of an E46 M3 steering wheel with the Napa leather rather than the perforated that the M Sport uses. It should be delivered in the next day or so and I'll post a picture when I install it.

Front door vapor seals
I removed the door panels on both front doors and resealed the inner vapor barriers with some weather strip adhesive. I had some wet floors after the recent rains and found both sides had come unglued on the '07.
*UPDATE* It worked! dry floors after last two days of rain, YAY! Last edited by BRG_N54; 03-29-2023 at 06:52 PM.. Reason: Adding update to repair |

So, indeed, I changed the starter after having the car flat-bedded from the airport where it refused to start a week ago. The whole process took longer than it should mostly due being busy at work and also some snafus related to parts shipping; and that latter was due to the fact that I ordered the big braided ground cable at the same time as I ordered the starter. Starters are pretty common, the ground cable somewhat less so.
I'm pretty sure that after nearly 230K miles, the starter (original) was toast. Truth be told, I knew it was on its way out as I was getting longer and kind of dodgy cranks for the past 6 months or so. But eventually, it just stopped cranking. Unfortunately that was at midnight at Logan airport. In my procrastination over the past 6 months, I had also wondered if the actual problem was the ground strap. Naturally, I did nothing about that either. So when the car totally crapped out, I decided to change both. As you can see from the pics, the ground strap was pretty bad too. I suspect that it was still marginally functioning (and that the killer issue ultimately was the starter itself), but obviously it was good to replace both. Oh, and I also changed the "hose that always breaks" (the CCV hose), just because I had one on hand from my last valve cover job. The job was kind of a pita, but there are certainly worse jobs. I took my time and did it in 2 half-days. As they say, "Next time, I can do it in an hour." Probably. As a side comment I will say that every DIY I saw (here, other online sites, gazillions of YouTube vids) was slightly different and in the end I digested all of those and just did the job without following anyone's step-by-step. Ymmv. Anyhow, all seems good now. Until the next thing. Last edited by jsunma; 03-28-2023 at 05:07 PM.. |

Starter is a big job. I agree on the intake removal synthesis. I think I've watched 2-3 videos for each major job I've done.

Managed to replace my right front wheel bearing only to go for a drive and the bearing rattle noise is still there..
Put the car on jacks at the rear and ran it and the noise was coming from the front output shaft of the transfer case.. removed the output shaft and put a plastic cap and went for a drive and still makes the noise so something is no bueno inside the transfer case.

Replaced the radio because the pixels were going bad. They were really bad when it was hot out.
The replacement screen has some lines in the background, almost like water stains on wood… But looks way better. You can see some random wire crimps on the wire harness too, not sure what that’s about. |
