Might add: No radiator No heater No defroster No power I had a 1965 Bug. It had a 6-volt electrical system. Driving at night with the headlights and the windshield wipers going was ... exciting. |

I had a ‘68. Was my favorite car (probably cause it was my first car). Only 53hp but man was it fun.

^ Think we have another member here sygazelle who had a Bug as his first car. Maybe we should start a Bug Club.

I've never owned a Bug but I did learn to drive in one. Will that qualify me for the Bug Club?

I had a '71 Super Beetle. Does that count? I had the torsion bars cranked as far down as they would go. It was so low that I ran over a dead squirrel and the exhaust dragged it down the road about 200 feet.

Mine was a '61 with a whopping 40HP. It had a Model 260 air conditioner. That's 2 windows open at 60mph. Actually, the wind wings worked pretty well. In addition the list of absent accessories already provided, I'll add: No gas gauge. When you ran out of gas, you reached under the dashboard and turned a lever, allowing the reserve of about a gallon of gas to be available. That gave me 30 miles to find a station. Great car. Fond memories. |

Does my vintage 1967 Formula Vee open-wheel race car count as a Bug? The formula uses the Bug's beam front axle/suspension, rear swing-axle gearbox, and aircooled engine. Plus, I own an original copy of John Muir's awesome book about how to keep a Beetle alive, which is great reading even if you don't own one.....

My first car was a '63 Beetle, got it in '68. Black with a red and white interior. A good portion of it was re-painted with brushed on Rustoleum. Got rid of it when the carb and fuel line caught on fire. "Upgraded" to a '65 Corvair, which I rolled at 65 MPH. Landed upright, one flat tire and only one window still intact, but it was still running. Drove it about 2 miles home. Replaced it with a '69 Corvair.

During my first two years in college, I borrowed my grandfather's '56 (split rear window, remember?) frequently. Lots of miles in that Beetle, though I never owned one.
